A Message from Principal Gallegos
Greetings, Barrows Families,
After a VERY COLD 4-day school week, many of us are ready to have a relaxing weekend, and based on our attendance, many students and staff will benefit from a few days to rest and get healthy.
Yesterday marked the 90th day of school (for our 1st-5th graders), which is the halfway point of the year. I want to highlight an important attendance letter we will email home next week to remind our families of the importance of school attendance and being on time. EVERY family will receive this letter- even if your student hasn't been late once or missed a school day. We understand that many absences are beyond your control (Families should keep their students home if they are running a fever (they must be fever-free without fever-reducing medication for 24 hours), have diarrhea, or have vomited in the last 24 hours. However, we want to reduce the number of unexcused absences. We see increased academic and/or social concerns for many students with multiple absences. For this reason, we included attendance goals in our School Improvement Plan this year (see goals here):
- 2% reduction in student chronic absenteeism compared to the previous year for our high needs profile (goal 11.8%).
- 2% reduction in student tardies for all students as compared to school year 2023/24.
Highlights:
- Attendance letters will be mailed home next week to all families.
- Principal's Pop-Up Reading Challenge READbowl Quarter 2 ends Sunday, and Quarter 3 begins Monday! Students can begin logging their minutes at any point! Let's encourage our students to read at home! Students should turn in their second reading log on Monday. We logged thousands of minutes as a school community during the first quarter!
- The Great Kindness Challenge Week begins Monday at Barrows. See Mrs. Rings's note below for more information!
- See important information from Nurse Adams regarding the Flu & Flu like symptoms below.
- There is still time to sign up for Math Night at Barrows (or be a volunteer) on Wednesday, January 29th. See the PTO section for more details!
Be well,
Alissa
Kindergarten 2025-26 Registration
Kindergarten registration is underway. Please remind friends in town that families must register by February 1st for priority placement for their neighborhood school. This is also a perfect time to reach out to building principals if you are unsure if your child is ready for kindergarten, in case you are considering holding a place for preschool as well. Our screening takes place after most preschool 's have completed their registration process.
Reading Public Schools has launched a new online registration platform for kindergarten for the 2025-2026 school year! Please use this link to register: https://forms.rediker.com/readingpublicschools.

The Great Kindness Challenge
During January 27 - 31, the Barrow students will participate in the Great Kindness Challenge, otherwise known as The Happiest Week of the Year! This is the second year Barrows has participated in the event. The Great Kindness Challenge is a wonderful opportunity for the students to practice as many acts of kindness as possible. We all know kindness is contagious, so as they practice kindness acts, so do others in the school and the community. Each student will be given a Kindness Checklist, which will go home on or before Friday, January 24. As the students complete their kind acts, they check it off, hoping to complete as many kind acts as possible.
The Great Kindness Challenge was created by Kids for Peace, a California-based global nonprofit that builds a global community of kind, compassionate, and empowered young people who are uplifting the world through love and action. Founded in 2006, the Great Kindness Challenge now has students from all around the world participating. Over 200 million students and over 41,000 schools worldwide participate. Together, we can create over 1 billion acts of kindness.
The students can get started on Friday, January 24, and the event lasts all the way through Friday, January 31. However, let's keep the kindness going. Talk to your child about the event and how it feels to do these acts of kindness. Maybe the whole family can try as well. When the event is over, talk about how you can continue practicing kind acts daily.
The students can return the checklist to school by Friday, February 7.

Message from the Health Office
Influenza-like illnesses are “very high” in our area. The below graph was taken from the Massachusetts DPH. It was updated today to reflect the week of 1/12/25-1/18/251. My prediction is that when it is updated next Friday, we will remain in the “very high” category. Many students have been out this week due to influenza-like illnesses
There are a number of reasons why influenza-like viruses spread more easily in the winter2:
Cold, dry air hardens the virus’s outer membrane, making it more stable and easier to spread
Dry air allows the virus to create smaller particles that travel farther and last longer
Dried out nasal passages make their job less effective at fighting off viruses
More time is spent indoors, which limits ventilation and increases risk of transmission
Inhaling colder air can make it harder for our respiratory tract to respond to viruses
Some viral illnesses thrive when it is dark and there is less sunlight
Ways to protect yourself and others:
Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Cover your cough and sneeze
Wash your hands often with soap and water, use hand sanitizer if soap and water is not available
Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose
Try to freshen the air around you - bring in fresh air if appropriate or run an air purifier
Maintain a relative indoor humidity at 40% and above - this will significantly reduce the infectivity of an aerosolized influenza virus3

Why is prompt arrival important?
Arriving at school on time demonstrates a commitment to a student's education, allows students to fully participate in lessons from the beginning, minimizes disruptions to the classroom, and fosters a positive learning environment by showing respect for teachers and peers.
Tips to arriving on time:
Establish a morning routine that is followed regularly
Set multiple alarms, if needed
Place the alarm across the room to make sure you physically get up out of bed before turning it off
Pick out your clothing the night before, this includes shoes and accessories
Pack your backpack and ensure everything is packed the night before
Do not wait until last minute to complete any school assignments
Pack and prepare breakfast, snack and lunch the night prior so it can be a “grab and go”
Try to minimize distractions
Have a consistent bedtime and routine
Establish back-up transportation if needed
Always plan some extra time into the routine incase things come up
Please reach out to us if you have any concerns about getting your student to school on time.

METCO
Reading Public Schools is a METCO District
METCO unites suburban towns with Boston to engage in a reciprocal learning partnership in support of all students. Because of this, every child who attends school in Reading Public Schools is a METCO student and every parent or guardian who has a student in RPS is a part of the METCO community.
"Since its founding during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement, the METCO program has enrolled tens of thousands of Boston students of color in predominately white school districts, creating the opportunity for those districts to experience the advantages of learning and working in a racially and ethnically diverse setting."

Barrows Safety Reminders
Arrival
- Please drive slowly up Edgemont to keep everyone safe; remember, it is a ONE-WAY during the school day.
- Do not park in the indented section by the gym. This is the "kiss & go" area for a quick drop-off.
- Doors open at 8:15 and close at 8:25. Your child needs to be in their seat by 8:25 AM. If your child arrives to school after the doors have closed, they must come to the front door and be marked tardy.
- The Staff Parking Lot is for staff only and off limits to all pedestrians from arrival-dismissal for the safety of all. Please respect this important aspect of our campus.
Dismissal:
- At dismissal time, there is no live pick-up in the driveway except for students who take the bus. Kindergarteners exit the building at 2:40 PM. The rest of the students dismiss at 2:45 PM from the same doors they enter in the morning.
As a safety reminder, the staff parking lot is staff-only. We respectfully ask that caregivers park along the streets. With our students exiting from their external doors in the parking lot, having cars drive in and out is not safe. You need to walk around the school on the blacktop to the back. Thanks for helping us out.
Ready to Play the Best Way
Please do not have your children wear flip-flops. Sneakers are best, but flip-flops are dangerous when running at recess (and Crocs aren't great).
Dogs and Puppies on School Grounds
School Committee policy prohibits dogs on school grounds as much as we all love dogs and puppies and as much fun as it is walking them. If you'd like to walk your dog as part of your pick-up routine, the dog has to stay off school property. If you'd like your child to walk to you on the sidewalk or to the driveway entrances at dismissal so you can wait with your dog, please make that plan with them.

An Important Reminder from Mrs. Atwood
Dear Barrows Families,
This is a friendly reminder that kids should wear sneakers on the days that they have Physical Education. I love Crocs too, but they don’t count as sneakers…even when they’re worn in sport mode! Thanks so much for your support with this safety matter.
