Team Dublin Weekly Update
Week of April 22, 2024
Mr. Kirschenbaum, ELA
This week, students will continue learning about what Ha and her family does after the fall of their city, Saigon. Students will also complete a research project on life in a refugee camp.
Mr. O'Malley, Math 6 and 7
Ms. Osman, Science
Spring Break! What a great time to enjoy the weather and human impact on the environment!
What an exciting week! We observed a rare solar eclipse and then learned about hurricanes. Students explored how wind develops and acts as a factor to create bigger storms like hurricanes. We explored the concept of probability and how it could be used to predict the chances of a hurricane forming in the ocean. Ask your student to explain what conditions are necessary to create a hurricane. You might be surprised. Now, with their understanding of temperature, air pressure, and humidity, they are ready to analyze and forecast weather events across the country. After spring break, students will learn how to read a weather map and predict changes in weather. We will wrap up the week by having them give a formal weather forecast presentation. Help them prepare by watching some weather forecasts on Weather.com or on a local TV station, please.
This week's roots words:
*psych = mind Think: psychology
osteo = bones Think: osteoporosis
*hemo = blood Think: hemoglobin, hematology
*derm = skin Think: epidermis, dermatology
*cardio = heart Think: cardiology, cardiologist
This is our final quarter of the year. The focus shifts to your student taking more responsibility for learning and meeting objectives.
Our checks in class shift to
(1) DID or DID NOT do the DO NOW for the notebook and takes notes
(2) binder organization
(3) classwork completion and homework turn in
(4) cooperative group work completion.
Please remember that FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS sets the standard for lab safety now and in the future. Having supplies for class sets the standard for being prepared for school. Good manners ensure that all have a chance to learn. Students are expected to clean up after themselves, respect school property, show respect, be on time, and focus on their own work without distracting other students. Please note that students are responsible for asking for extra help/time which they will receive IF they have used class time appropriately.
Please feel free to contact me, but understand that I still do not have a telephone in the classroom. Your best bet is to send an email. Our goal is to have your student ready for science classes here and for the high school of the student's choice.
Still reading? Super! Make sure your student has pencils, erasers, and knows how to watch a weather report!
Ms. Patsalos, Intermediate ESOL
I hope you have a great Spring Break! When we return we will continue reading the Crossover and summarizing as we go.
