Science
Hi Scientists!
This week, students will be learning about the scientific method, with a focus on independent variables, dependent variables, and controls. Students will complete a "What Is a Scientist?" worksheet in class, which will help them explore the role and qualities of scientists. They will also participate in an engaging activity involving mystery envelopes. In this activity, students will use their observation skills to identify the contents of the envelopes, making for an interactive and educational experience. Students should turn in their Letter to a Science Teacher Final Draft by Monday, 9/9. Students will take Roots 1.2 quiz on Friday, 9/13. Lastly, please ensure that students have their class supplies the required items include: a 3-ring binder, notebook, 5-tab dividers, a box of tissues, and a roll of paper towels. We are looking forward to a productive and engaging week.
Roots 1.2 words:
Meter = measure (Think: thermometer, diameter)
*Cent = 100 (Think: century, percent)
*Graph = write/draw (Think: geography, telegraph)
*Helio = sun (Think: heliocentric, heliographic)
Terre = land (Think: terrestrial, territory, terraform)
Keepers: uni, bi, tri
World Geography
Last Week students reviewed for their map quiz and set up their binders upon the return of the long weekend. All students are expected to bring their one-inch binder, 5-tab divider, and ringed notebook to class 9/3. If your student has not brought in these items, it's important that they do for organization for the our geography class. We logged into aspen and all students now have access to their account. Students ended out their week beginning unit 1 glossary words. These will be foundational for students in geography class.
This Week students will continue their glossary learning the FIVE parts of a map. They will practice the map skills through worksheet activities and reviews throughout the week. They will close out their week with a formative on map skills.
English Language & Arts (ELA)
It’s been a great week talking about perspective writing and how it influences information. Next week, our focus will change to sensory language and how it enhances the understanding of the scene. Please see the schedule below:
Monday – Sensory Language Intro
Tuesday – Sensory Language practice with Amigo Brothers
Wednesday – Sensory Language practice with Fish Cheeks
Thursday –BOY Map Test
Friday –BOY Map Test
Students should be coming to class with:
Pencil
Novel that they are interested in
Homework folder
Agenda
Please note: I HIGHLY recommend families purchase personal copies of novels for the year so they can read from home if they are absent or if they have to finish a chapter at home. The novel we are beginning with, that they will need to bring to and from school, is Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. This novel will begin on 9/9.
French
Madame's homeroom is reminded to bring their signed field trip permission slip and money to first period for our upcoming Sandy Springs field trip.
It has been an exciting week in Introduction to French! After getting to know each other in the first week of the school year, last week we started building our French base. We now know how to say the French alphabet, greet each other and ask and say our name…all in French. Next week we’ll be learning to say how we’re doing. Middle schoolers can be slow to share what they’re learning at school but encourage your student to teach you some French. All homework assignments are posted on Canvas daily!
Our class welcomes any donation of pencils or tissues for our learning community.
Deal Library Corner
This week 6th grade students will be visiting the library with their ELA classes for the first time this year. They will be choosing one book to use for personal reading and for their ELA 40 book challenge. I will be asking all students to be responsible with their books this year and return them in a timely manner. We do not charge fines for lost books, but I do ask students to donate a replacement book if one is lost and if they are able. Students should always come to me to let me know when a book is lost or damaged so that I can update the system and remove it from their record. If a student leaves Deal with overdue books on their account, they will be asked to pay for them before they graduate high school so it is always a good idea to let me know so that we can prevent additional expenses to families.
I will be sending overdue notices out once a month. These notices do not include the titles of the books as we want to protect the students' privacy. Students and families can login to their account in Follett Destiny (Can be found in Clever) to see more specific information about the books that they have out. Families can also reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
Our library book orders are going to be sent out at the end of October. I am asking students to send me any book recommendations that they would like to see in our library. Students and families can make book recommendations at the link below:

In addition, families can refer to our library's website (aka LibGuide) for more information and links related to the library, reading, newsletters, research, and more at the link below:
