Black History Month
Celebrating Black History Month in Hoboken Public Schools!
This February, we honor the rich history, achievements, and contributions of Black leaders, scholars, and trailblazers who have shaped our world. From science and politics to art and activism, Black history is American history.
Throughout the month, Hoboken Public Schools will engage in special events, classroom discussions, and community activities to celebrate and educate.
Hoboken Public School District Upcoming Events
We are thrilled to announce our first-ever Dads’ Night Out! After hosting 9 successful Moms’ Nights Out, it’s time to celebrate the dads who are just as invested in supporting our district public schools and community. Save the date for March 13, 2025, at Antique Loft for "The Agave Sessions." This event will feature live music, tequila tasting, and a chance to connect with fellow dads and community members—all while supporting the heart of our town, our district schools. Your involvement and contributions make a real difference, and we can’t wait to get to know you better. Let’s make this a night to remember.

Art at Brandt School
This week in Art, students continued working on their George Seurat inspired landscape pictures. Students used the pointillism technique to shade and color in their drawings of the beach or mountain landscape using small dots to enhance shadows and darker areas while using more spaced out dots to show lighter colors and areas of the scenes.
They are really enjoying it, and it has been very relaxing and calming for them to take the time to continue to create dots using markers for our class period.
Music at Brandt School
3rd Grade: Students wrapped up note recognition with rhythm bingo and are preparing for Friday's PTO bingo night. They're excited to create their own recorder cases and start playing recorders in two weeks!
4th Grade: Students finished bucket drumming, learning new musical concepts and practicing for the upcoming theater showcase on Monday.
5th Grade: Students presented research projects on various musical instruments, showcasing their hard work.
Strings and Band: Rehearsals have begun for the spring concert on June 4th—Save the date!

2nd and 3rd graders explored the glockenspiel, learning instrument anatomy, care, and self-control in group play. They practiced music literacy through call and response and began playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
Kindergarteners studied musical opposites through dynamics, identifying loud and soft sounds. They learned the Italian terms forte (loud), piano (soft), and mezzo (medium), then practiced following dynamic changes in a musical game.
Pre-AP Dance & Mindfulness and Movement at Hoboken MS
Each grade level also performed their unit dance, including "The Wizard of Oz," a fusion dance, and global dances like the Tango.
Pre AP Theatre
This week, students played the Werewolf role-identification game, testing their deception skills. They also completed a one-page play. On Friday, the new marking period began, and students moved to the next course in the rotation. Next week, new students will start the Pre-AP Theater curriculum.

Grade & Content Level ~ What Have We Been Learning?
Joseph F. Brandt School
Kindergarten at Brandt School
ELA: Students learned the letter Hh and its sound, practiced reading and spelling the sight word my, and explored the question: What do living things need to grow? They also identified rhyme and repetition in texts. Dual language learners focused on the letter Rr and the sight word que.
Math: Students practiced comparing totals and adding/subtracting to create new quantities. They also enjoyed math games like “double compare” and “build it change it”.
Social Studies: Students explored the essential question: How do I fit into all the different communities I'm a part of? They worked together to identify what makes them and their families unique.
2nd Grade at Brandt School
Kindness Week: Students participated in the Lead U assembly, learning conflict resolution, leadership skills, and empathy.
Social Studies: We began exploring influential Black Americans in honor of Black History Month, with activities and discussions throughout February.
Reading: Students practiced making predictions while reading fictional texts, using their Wonders reading companion to guide their thinking.
Writing: Students are finalizing their expository essays, completing peer conferences and edits ahead of publishing.
Math: We're wrapping up Unit 3, where students deepened their understanding of place value and addition/subtraction with two-digit numbers. They’ll demonstrate mastery on the Unit 3 assessment.
4th Grade at Brandt School
ELA: Students continued reading What Would She Do? and discussing the inspiring lives of trailblazing women like Amelia Earhart and Frida Kahlo, focusing on their perseverance and impact. Students also worked on their project, researching their own chosen trailblazing women.
Social Studies: We celebrated The Great Kindness Challenge, reflecting on friendship and ways to promote kindness. Students created kindness mugs with notes for The Hive and began learning about Black historical figures to kick off Black History Month.
Math: Students worked on fractions and decimals, practicing adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators and converting improper fractions to mixed numbers. Hands-on activities helped students strengthen their problem-solving skills.
Physical Education
Grades 3-5: Students took their hockey skills to the next level with the “Clean Out Your Garage” game, using sticks to transport objects into designated areas. They honed coordination, teamwork, and math skills as they kept track of their scores. Students reflected on NHL legend Wayne Gretzky’s advice: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
Grades 1-2: Students practiced basic stick handling with foam balls, improving control and hand-eye coordination through fun drills and games. They embraced Sidney Crosby's motto: "Play with confidence and believe in yourself."
Kindergarten: Students raced through scooter relays, focusing on teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship. They embodied Mark Messier’s quote: “The highest compliment you can pay me is to say that I work hard every day,” showing great effort and enthusiasm!

Kindergarten at Connos School: Ms. Bartolotti, Ms. Fernandez, Ms. Fleischer, Ms. Criqui, and Ms. Klag
ELA: This week, students explored the question, "What do living things need to grow?" while focusing on the letter Hh and the sight word my. They read My Garden and Hop Can Hop!, identifying story elements and illustrating key events. Our KOALAfied Kindergarteners impressed us with their dedication during center activities!
Social Studies: In honor of the Great Kindness Challenge, students discussed ways to show kindness at school, home, and in the community. They read stories, took a kindness pledge, and expressed their ideas through writing and drawing. They also learned about Lunar New Year traditions, celebrating the Year of the Snake!
2nd Grade at Connos School: Ms. Rinaldi, Ms. Celentano, Ms. Garcia
Math: Students practiced using standard notation for addition and subtraction and played Collect $1, reinforcing coin values and telling time.
ELA: Second graders explored story elements with Happy New Year, comparing global celebrations. They focused on silent letters (wr, kn, gn, mb, sc) and similes and created lantern crafts to contrast U.S. and Chinese New Year traditions.
Social Studies: Students reflected on individuality for Holocaust Remembrance Day, participated in the Great Kindness Challenge, and learned about Lunar New Year customs.
Magical Moments: A Bullying Prevention Laser Light Show taught students sign language for words like respect, inspire, and trust. They had a blast learning "Do the right thing!" in sign language!
4th Grade at Connors School: Ms. Schulz, Mrs. Rodriguez, Ms. Stubbe
Math: Fourth graders explored equivalent fractions using fraction tiles and problem-solving strategies. They were introduced to decimal notation, identifying tenths and hundredths.
ELA: Students kicked off Unit 3, That's the Spirit!, reading What Would She Do?, focusing on trailblazing women like Cleopatra and Joan of Arc. They also drafted a Literary Analysis essay on Mae Jemison and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Social Studies: Students studied the exploration of the Americas, analyzing a timeline and comic for context. They practiced textbook reading skills, connected exploration to personal experiences, and learned new vocabulary.
Physical Education at Connors School
This week, grades 3-5 advanced in lacrosse, transitioning to regular sticks and working on catching throws from teammates—one of the year's toughest skills! Meanwhile, K-2 focused on scooping ground balls, progressing from raking to full scoops. They wrapped up with the game “Clean Your Yard,” practicing their skills in a fun competition.

Kindergarten at Wallace School
ELA: Students focused on identifying the initial and middle sounds of the letter Ee, brainstorming words, and using the new sight word "are" in sentences. They also explored diagrams as nonfiction text features. In Dual-Language, students learned the letter Jj and practiced using the Spanish sight word "por" in writing.
Math: Kindergarteners explored measurable attributes, learning to identify characteristics of objects and appropriate measurement tools.
Social Studies: Students discussed how to respect and include everyone in their community through activities on kindness and inclusion.
2nd Grade at Wallace School
ELA: Second graders read They've Got the Beat, exploring musical expression and discussing self-expression through dance, art, poetry, and writing. They learned how self-expression builds confidence and strengthens connections with others.
Math: Students practiced three-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, solving word problems with missing addends to enhance problem-solving skills.
Science/Social Studies: In anticipation of Groundhog Day, students learned about groundhogs' life cycle, habitat, and fun facts. They're excited to see if winter will continue or spring will arrive early!
4th Grade at Wallace School
ELA: Fourth graders continued reading What Would She Do?, learning about trailblazing women like Cleopatra, Amelia Earhart, and Malala Yousafzai. In Reading Wonders, they analyzed Judy's Appalachia, identifying the author’s perspective and the importance of timelines in biographies.
Math: Students explored mixed numbers and improper fractions, learning to convert between them. They also practiced adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators, simplifying their answers.
Social Studies: Students studied the 13 original colonies, focusing on the New England, Middle, and Southern regions. Through discussions and hands-on activities, they deepened their understanding of early American history.

This week, students reviewed for their Unit 2 test on the USA and Canada, researching Canadian provinces and playing Kahoot and Blooket to study. They took the test on Friday. Next week, they'll begin Unit 3 on Mexico, starting with an overview and exploring its geography.
8th Grade Social Studies at Hoboken MS
Pre-AP World History & Social Studies Update!
This week, Pre-AP World History students completed their January Research Task on the Fall of Ancient Rome. They also studied ancient religions and the Epic of Gilgamesh through video analysis and collaboration.
In Social Studies, students explored the Age of Exploration, analyzing the Columbian Exchange and its effects. They also examined primary sources on the Spanish Conquistadors and wrote responses on their treatment of natives.

Academic Team Shines in Continental Mathematics League Meet #4!
The team competed in their 4th of 5 meets this week, with scores contributing to both group and individual totals. Congrats to our top scorers: Aaron KO, Martin Shchudro, James Hanna, Saral Kulkarni, and Dylan Patel!
Hoboken MS World Language Corner
Spanish Class Highlights!
Grade 6: Students learned how to ask and answer questions about where someone is from, using the verb "ser". They also practiced definite and indefinite articles with singular and plural nouns.
Grade 7: Students worked on using adjectives and nouns, reading stories and completing activities to improve reading comprehension. They wrote about their favorite pets and created drawings.
Grade 8: Students explored the expressions "tener que" and "deber", practicing how to use them in daily situations.

What an incredible night at the 1st Annual Hoboken Middle School Athletics and Activities Expo!
A special highlight was the Hudson River Explorers program, where students dive into environmental science through hands-on learning experiences along the beautiful Hudson River.
From studying water quality to exploring local biodiversity, students gain a deeper connection to nature, develop critical thinking skills, and foster environmental stewardship.
We also showcased the Hoboken Middle School Living Lab, an innovative space where real-world science and environmental education come to life. Students engage in outdoor fieldwork, experiments, and explore ecological topics, all while taking advantage of our stunning riverfront location.

After jumping out to a 24 point lead, the Hoboken Middle School Girls Basketball Team beat Weehawken MS by a final score of 30-14.
Tigers Girls Win!
The Hoboken MS Girls Basketball Team (3-2) defeated Lincoln MS by a score of 37-6 yesterday afternoon in Fairview, NJ.
Jasmin High led all scorers with 15 points, Mikayla Colvin had 6 points, and Kendra Robinson led a defensive surge for the Tigers!

Final Score: Hoboken 61-Weehawken 12 The Tigers were led by Chance Rivera's 20 points and Aaron Bishop's 15 points.

The Hoboken MS Boys Basketball Team defeated Lincoln MS by a score of 48-39 Wednesday afternoon in Fairview, NJ.
The team had a great defensive effort and responded well to the competition as they continue to grow.

CP Chemistry – Students explored periodic trends, ionic & covalent bonds, and built molecule models to understand chemical structures.
Honors Physics – Students studied matter’s states, solid mechanics, and structural design. Hands-on labs included Pringles arcs & measuring spring extensions to apply physics in real-world scenarios!
Engineering with Mr. Torres at Hoboken HS
Students explored Reverse Engineering by disassembling wind-up toys to analyze their structure, function, and motion mechanisms. They carefully examined the gearbox and metal spring, uncovering how potential energy transforms into kinetic energy.
Life Skills and Vocational Skills at Hoboken HS
Life Skills with Ms. Sivo, Ms. Lisa & Ms. Maria
Students worked on bilateral coordination, using both hands to trace symmetrical patterns, improving fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Vocational
Students explored map reading and the compass rose, learning to navigate using cardinal directions and map keys. Stay tuned as they apply these skills in the Hoboken community!

Students researched healthy snacks, created shopping lists, and navigated ShopRite. They prepared chia pudding, apples with nut butter, and carrots with hummus—taste test approved!

Holocaust, Genocide & Modern Humanity Class with Mrs. Koerner
Honoring Holocaust Remembrance Day
Students in the Holocaust, Genocide & Modern Humanity course reflected on the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation. They watched the UN memorial service, researched Holocaust victims, and created memory candles, finding personal connections through music, family, learning, and more. This lesson highlighted the human stories behind the six million lost.

Algebra 1 – Students explored key features of functions, created their own graphs, and analyzed real-world situations using intervals and rate of change.
Geometry – Students studied congruence transformations, used rigid motions to identify missing measurements, and learned triangle congruence theorems (SAS, SSS, ASA, AAS, HL).
Algebra 2 – Students examined polynomial functions, analyzed key features, and practiced adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials.
World Languages at Hoboken HS

Students explored Chinese traditions, the zodiac race, and celebrated with symbolic foods. A special poster was hung to share the joy with the HHS community!

Exploring Mexican Culture & Art
Spanish students deepened their learning with a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, exploring Mexico’s rich printmaking tradition from the 18th to mid-20th century. They studied José Guadalupe Posada’s iconic skeleton prints and learned how printmaking addressed socio-political issues and celebrated Mexican identity.
Hands-On Experience – Students participated in an art studio workshop, creating their own pieces after a guided tour of the Mexican Prints at the Vanguard exhibition.

This week, Culinary 1 students cooked their dumplings—making potstickers on Wednesday and boiled dumplings on Thursday! Meanwhile, International Pastries students crafted Char Sui Bao and adorable piggy egg custard bao.

Driver’s Ed Update with Mr. Fernandez
This week, students learned about driver privileges & penalties, including sharing the road, the consequences of unsafe driving (like DUIs & reckless driving), and the rules for bike and e-scooter riders.
As the 2nd Marking Period wraps up, students are gearing up for their final exam, excited to earn their learner’s permit and gain real-world driving experience!

Hoboken HS Freshman Norah Battle Featured in The New York Times!
Last fall, the NYT asked teens worldwide to share their thoughts on growing up during political change. Out of over 1,600 submissions, Norah Battle was selected for her visual art piece, "Teen Views on Politics." Her comic highlights how teens learn about politics, often relying on social media for information.

This week, Miss Lanza’s class became meteorologists!️ They predicted the weather and checked their forecasts during recess. Everyone was so excited to be outside!

The class explored cultural traditions, listened to dragon dance music, and made dragon puppets. They practiced fine motor skills by cutting Chinese lanterns and learned that red brings luck, with some wearing red for extra good fortune. Students also tried using chopsticks to pick up pom poms and are excited to make snakes with playdough for the Year of the Wood Snake!
ECE at Wallace School
January was filled with learning in Wallace Class 104. Students began the month by exploring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through books, songs, and crafts, learning about his speeches, marches, and peaceful message.
The winter snowstorm provided an opportunity for science exploration as students described snow using their senses after reading "Snow" by Eric Edison. In math, students created ice castles using shapes in a fun Tools of the Mind activity.
Students celebrated National Sticker Day with art, National Polka Dot Day by wearing dots and making dot art, and learned about the Lunar New Year by creating lanterns, studying zodiac animals, and dancing to festive music.
