Gratitude for Your Support
As the end of the year approaches, we want to take a moment to thank you for several key contributions:
- Thank you for taking your students to school. Your commitment to their attendance and punctuality has a significant impact on their academic success.
- Thank you for being patient and flexible. Whether adapting to new schedules, policies, or unexpected changes, your resilience has been crucial.
- Thank you for helping your children with their homework. Your involvement in their education at home reinforces the learning and development that take place in the classroom.

As we close out the school year, we’re proud to share several areas of academic growth across the Coos Bay School District. These improvements reflect the dedication of our students, staff, and families, and highlight the positive impact of our shared focus on high expectations, strong instruction, and student support. Some of the key highlights include:
K–8 Math Growth: Proficiency rates in math have steadily increased due to aligned instruction and targeted supports.
Improved K–12 Attendance: Attendance rates have risen districtwide, ensuring more students are present and ready to learn.
K–8 Reading Proficiency: Reading levels have improved across elementary and middle grades.
Increased 8th Grade Algebra 1 Enrollment: A growing percentage of 8th graders are taking Algebra 1, signaling earlier access to advanced coursework.
Advanced Coursework Expansion: More students in grades 9–12 are enrolled in at least one Advanced Placement (AP) or dual college credit course.
Higher Graduation Rates Projected: Both Marshfield and Destinations Academy are on track to post increased graduation rates.
100% Graduation at Destinations: Every senior at Destinations Academy graduated this year—a remarkable milestone.
Improved Passing Rates in Grades 7–12: More secondary students are passing their courses, contributing to overall academic progress.
Parent and Student Choice in the CBSD
At CBSD, we understand the significance of parent and student choice in education. Our district offers a wide range of options to accommodate the diverse needs and preferences of our families. Including:
- Traditional brick and mortar schools;
- The personalization and small class sizes of Destinations Academy;
- The flexibility of Resource Link (home school);
- The innovative holistic approach of Lighthouse Charter;
- The balanced structure of Hybrid Learning (in-person and on-line);
- Or the convenience of 100% online learning.
If you have any questions regarding these educational delivery models, please reach out to the Coos Bay SD at (541) 267-3104.
Water Safety: A Critical Reminder
As summer approaches, it is important to stay vigilant about water and fire safety. During these warmer months, many of us enjoy outdoor activities, whether it's swimming in pools and lakes or gathering around campfires. Here are some essential tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer:
Water Safety:
- Always supervise children when they are near water, even if they know how to swim.
- Ensure that everyone swims in designated areas with lifeguards present.
- Learn and practice CPR to be prepared in case of emergencies.
- Encourage the use of life jackets, especially for young children and inexperienced swimmers.

Summer Reading Tips
Summer Reading Tips for Families
The importance of literacy during the summer months and early learning cannot be overstated. As children transition from the structured environment of school to the more relaxed atmosphere of summer, it is crucial to maintain their engagement with reading and learning. Summer literacy activities help prevent the "summer slide," where students may lose some of the academic gains made during the school year. Encouraging reading, storytelling, and educational games can enrich a child's vocabulary, comprehension, and cognitive abilities, laying a strong foundation for their future academic success. List of summer reading tips for families:
· Set a Daily Reading Routine: Dedicate a specific time each day for reading, whether it's in the morning, afternoon, or before bedtime.
· Create a Cozy Reading Nook: Designate a comfortable and quiet space in your home where your child can enjoy their books.
· Visit Your Local Library: Make regular trips to the library to explore new books and participate in summer reading programs.
· Choose a Variety of Books: Encourage your child to read different genres and styles to keep their interest piqued and expose them to various themes.
· Read Together: Spend time reading aloud to your child or take turns reading pages. This can be a bonding activity and also improve their reading skills.
· Set Reading Goals: Challenge your child with achievable reading goals, such as finishing a certain number of books by the end of summer.
· Discuss What They Read: Engage in conversations about the books they are reading to enhance comprehension and critical thinking.
· Incorporate Technology: Utilize e-books and audiobooks for variety and convenience, especially during travel.
· Relate Books to Activities: Plan activities related to the books they are reading, such as visiting a museum, cooking a recipe, or exploring nature.
· Be a Reading Role Model: Demonstrate your own love for reading by setting an example and sharing your favorite books with your child.
