World Language Trip Information
World Language Trip Meeting
Deal will host an interest meeting for families in-person at Deal at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, September 25th. Sign-up information will be shared in the coming weeks. These trips have limited space and are first come, first served, so we encourage families to sign up once the links are shared.
World Language Trip Registration
As part of Deal's commitment to inspiring excellence, curiosity, and compassion in our students, Deal Middle School will once again plan optional international trips as a supplement to our world language program. 8th grade students enrolled in Spanish, French, Chinese, or Spanish Humanities will have the opportunity to join their designated trip. These trips are entirely optional, funded by families, chaperoned by Deal staff, and open only to Deal 8th grade students in good academic, attendance, and behavioral standing. We find these trips to be a powerful experience for all involved.
To register for the world language trips, families will need to complete two steps:
Submit a signed permission slip to the trip's sponsor by Friday, September 27th. Permission slips should be turned in to your student's language teacher or emailed directly to the trip sponsor.
Permission slip for students in Spanish
(DealSpanishClass@gmail.com)Permission slip for students in French

(Elyse.Lerum@k12.dc.gov)Hoja de Permiso Para Humanidades
(Elyse.Lerum@k12.dc.gov)Once the trips are approved by DCPS, families will need to register with the travel company. We anticipate registrations will open later this month. Registration links will only be shared with families who submit a signed permission slip.
Please note, completing the permission slip gives your student permission to travel and expresses interest in the trip, but does not guarantee attendance on the trip. Once the trip is fully approved by DCPS, families will need to complete the tour company's registration process, including paying for the trip and turning in all required documents. If you are considering joining the trip at all, please submit the permission slip to ensure your family has access to the registration page when it becomes available. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to sharing this experience with our students.

NAF Night at Jackson-Reed High School
The Deal team apologizes this is scheduled at the same time as our world language trip interest meeting. The Jackson-Reed team has shared the NAF information will be shared multiple ways and all the world language trip information will be shared via team newsletters, so families should choose which event best matches their needs.
September 25th
5:45-6:00: Check-in, arrive, settled
6:00-6:50: Presentation in auditorium
6:50-7:30: Academy Fair and ice cream social in the atrium
As many of you know, academies are an important part of Jackson-Reed's academic culture. We boast of 10 academies, but we know that some of them have different designations. Eight of them are Career-Technical Education (CTE) pathways. Seven are National Academy Foundation (NAF) Academies, and two are specific to Jackson-Reed. So many acronyms! So confusing, right?
To help ease the confusion and to celebrate being together for a new year, the NAF Academy team is going to host a NAF Night on September 25 from 5:45-7:30pm. Please save this date and time on your calendar. Our objective of the evening is to fill bellies with ice cream (and sorbet) sundaes, celebrate student work, outline what current academies are all about, and how they operate here at Jackson-Reed.
If your student is already in an academy, please come! If you are a ninth and tenth grade family who is considering an academy, please come! If you are an upperclassmen family who isn't in an academy but have a child in middle school planning to attend Jackson-Reed, please come!
Please RSVP for this event by September 21 at this link.

What is needed for my class:
EVERYDAY: Pens/pencils (I have no preference of color or type of pen or pencil), composition notebook
- HAVE READY IN YOUR LOCKER: Ruler, calculator, colored pencils
Ms. Walters: History
Last week students were able to discuss the various ways that African people & Native Americans resisted colonization and slavery in the Americas. Students used this information to mark various events & interactions between Africans, Native Americans & Europeans on a timeline spanning the years we have covered so far in class. Students then used that timeline to complete a formative graphic organizer that had them analyze 2 of these interactions to determine if they were conflicts or corporation and how they impacted groups of people. Students should be finishing their timelines and/or their cultural interactions organizer this weekend. This will NOT be marked late if turned in on Monday!
The schedule for next week is below.
- Monday: Geography & Overview of 13 Colonies
- Tuesday: Review Day
- Wednesday: End of Unit Assessment - study guide located on Canvas
- Thursday: Introduction 2-paragraph Summative
- Friday: Work today 2- Paragraph Summative
Ms. Cunha: English
This week ELA students finished their Beginning of Year MAP Reading assessment. All students have recorded their Lexile scores in their English notebooks. Students also took their first formative assessment of term 1. Students were asked to "drop-in" to a scene in A Raisin in the Sun and extend the scene from Walter Lee's perspective. On Friday, students went to the library to check out independent reading books and completed an MLA Citation scavenger hunt to get oriented with citation and formatting standards in 8th grade.
Next week, students will take RCT 1 which asks students to read a passage from A Raisin in the Sun and analyze how the scene's dialogue serves to further characterize Walter Lee. On Tuesday, students will work in stations to refresh their narrative writing skills before their Summative assessment on Wednesday & Thursday. The Summative will be scored according to IB Criterion C: Producing Text and will look very similar to the formative that they took on the 19th. On Friday, students will begin Act 1 Scene 2 in A Raisin in the Sun, looking at how an author's use of rich dialogue enhances characters and the overall plot of the play.
Ms. Anderson: Math
This past week, Algebra 1 students worked on learning how to solve systems of equations using the graphing and substitution method. Students also completed their first seek-n-solve in the classroom to practice these skills. When students get back on Monday we will review both methods and begin learning about the elimination method. Students should also expect an IB quiz on this material next week.
Math 8
This past week in Math 8 students continued to learn about rigid transformations and sequences of transformations. We completed various activities, both digital and written to review these concepts. Students will take an IB quiz on this material next Tuesday. Following this quiz, students will spend the week learning about the difference between congruency and similarity and may also receive a project focusing on sequences of transformations.
Remind
It is very important that you and/or your student subscribe to my Remind Alerts. I will be sending out a message sometime on Monday reminding kids to bring pencil, paper and a notebook to class. Remind is how I communicate information to students about their homework. Notices go directly to their phone and are mainly received through a text message (or the app if you download it from the Google Play Store or the App Store). At times I will also attach the assignment in Remind as well. The other useful quality of Remind is that students can ask questions through the app about their homework. These questions go straight to me, so there is no need to feel embarrassed about asking a "dumb question". Most of the time students just need a quick point in the right direction to finish their homework.
If you are not currently receiving Remind notices from me (I've sent several), please make sure you join the correct class by clicking on the link below. You can sign up to receive messages through email, or as text messages through your phone.
