The new home of GLOBE Elementary
Sunday, March 12, 2023
Dear GLOBE community,
We are delighted to share that we have agreed to terms on a new, long-term home for The GLOBE Academy’s kindergarten through fifth grades.
As you know, we have spent the past year working diligently on a Master Facilities Plan for our school, and we have been hamstrung by the many limitations of our aging Lower Campus. We sought — and are thrilled to have found — a property that will allow us to continue educating a generation of globally minded students who will affect real change in the world.
The new home of GLOBE Elementary is located at the corner of North Druid Hills and Clairmont Roads, currently the home of Clairmont Presbyterian Church.
This unique space will allow us to achieve the following:
Unite kindergarten through fifth grade all on one single elementary school campus, not far from Upper Campus
Provide a high-quality gymnasium that will enable our physical education classes and our growing athletics program
Allot dedicated space for each of our Connections classes
House a single-use cafeteria space for K–5 students
Provide ample green space and playground space for recreation
As we shared earlier this week, the leadership of Clairmont Presbyterian approached our school’s leadership about selling this property last fall, and they are sincerely enthusiastic about our school’s mission and vision. They share our focus on creating a global community here in Atlanta, with people from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds, who speak many different languages in their homes. And today, their congregants voted to approve the sale of the property.
With this purchase, GLOBE will take ownership of the buildings currently known as Milligan Hall and the Family Life Center, as well as approximately four acres of outdoor space, two parking lots located to the east and west sides of the Family Life Center, and seven residential/ministry properties currently owned by the church. This will total approximately 7.5 acres. The church will retain ownership of its sanctuary building and adjacent parking lot, though our community will have shared use of the parking lot.
Here’s a visual aid to help you see the location of the campus and the specific spaces that will belong to GLOBE:
When our elementary students move into the new space — our intent is that this will happen at the start of the 2024–25 academic year — Grades 6–8 will remain at Upper Campus. The space freed up by the vacated fourth and fifth grade classrooms at Upper Campus will allow us to 1) increase the number of GLOBE Middle School homerooms and 2) create long-desired educational spaces for the middle school, such as a proper library.
While we are very excited about this news, we also know it will raise plenty of questions and logistical challenges. We also acknowledge that this move will affect families differently, particularly with respect to transportation. The board has deliberated extensively and thoughtfully — about everything from campus safety to school start times — and we have prepared this FAQ document for your review. Of course, in the months to come, we will continue the important work of gathering input, addressing challenges, and readying our new home for our community.
So, what’s next?
In order to close on the property, our financiers require us to be fully zoned and permitted in accordance with the use and design of the new campus. This process is in the works; we expect it will take 6–8 months.
Once we close on the property, we will begin renovating the facilities to meet our specific needs. The majority of these renovations will be aesthetic, not structural. During this time, we will also ensure major systems like the HVAC are running smoothly and future-proofed to ensure our campus can be used without interruption for many years to come.
This spring, we will have dedicated opportunities for you to ask questions, raise concerns, and provide input. We will also keep you apprised of progress via email and at board meetings. If you have any time-sensitive questions, please feel welcome to email boardofdirectors@theglobeacademy.net.
We hope you will share in our enthusiasm about the new home for GLOBE Elementary, and we look forward to talking with you more about it soon.
In community,
