The Pulse - August 2023 Newsletter
Hello from Milledgeville!
It's been a busy start to the fall term here at GCSU with a record freshman class of over 1,800. This is the largest freshman class in the history of Georgia College & State University, and we also had the largest number to transfer to GCSU. The diversity of the student body also improved significantly, and we maintained high academic standards with this extremely qualified class.
The College of Health Sciences (COHS) is doing well in handling the influx of new and excited students. In the School of Nursing, a BSN to DNP program is being discussed and program outcomes aligned. The process to gain accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Helath (CEPH) for our BS in Public Health degree in the School of Health & Human Performance has also started its first step. In addition, a new Coaching and Athletic Performance concentration for the MS in Health & Human Performance rolled out this fall.
This summer a new Introduction to Health Professions course was implemented and had an enrollment of 19 students! This course introduces students to a variety of health care and health science professions so they can find out what it takes to get into and complete each one.
Next year only three of the University System of Georgia institutions will require the SAT or ACT to be admitted. GCSU, along with Georgia Tech and UGA, will all require these scores as part of the holistic admissions process. You will note this on some of our branding as we approach the recruiting season for next fall's admission.
Congratulations to Dr. Marcia Henry and Dr. Morgan Fordham, who have completed the Doctor of Nursing Practice. This adds additional doctorly trained professional to our team in nursing. Also, the COHS Leadership Board met on campus September 14th with several attending here in Milledgeville. We continue to work toward fundraising goals for a mobile clinic via the Center for Health and Social Issues and, of course, we are always interested in scholarship dollars for our students.
This fall, 92% of our freshmen qualified for the Hope or Zell Miller Scholarship programs. We also want to continue to offer opportunities for students from rural Georgia and surrounding areas near Milledgeville through recruitment efforts and scholarship opportunities! The Lettie Pate Whitehead Nursing Scholars program is an excellent example of this process in motion. We are investigating ways to improve our Simulation and Translational Research Center as it moves toward national accreditation too.
If you find yourself near Milledgeville, please stop by and say hello and let us know if you are interested in being more involved with the College of Health Sciences!
