The Principal's Corner with Dr. Barlow
Greetings Parents!
I hope you had a great 3-day weekend and enjoyed your family during this Labor Day. I wanted to share some important updates, so you may hold these dates until we get a flier distributed in the near future!
As a staff, we have been considering your critical role as a home educator and the importance that each of you, like our ATs, receive high-quality professional development and understanding the key, central focus of our work together in preparing your child for their future and quality of life.
21st Century Learning
It is interesting to consider that many of the jobs that our children will hold in the next decade or more do not even exist yet! There will be many changes in technology and practices, and yet, we can and will plan for their success, by building in them the key raw materials of a successful future by focussing on 21st Century Learning Skills, or what we may call, "The Five C's":
1) Communication (being effective communicators in speaking and writing)
2) Critical Thinking
3) Collaboration (working effectively with others)
4) Creativity and (finding creative solutions)
5) Caring (being aware of the needs of others and meeting these needs)
Oct. 9 Math Training at HRCS (for grades TK-12)
We will be offering an engaging and extremely useful training for you on Oct. 9. We will have three 90-minute sessions to meet your schedule needs, each session being the same content to address families who teach students ages 4 to 18. Jamie Garner, our math instructional coach and specialist and content expert who has done some amazing work with our students and families and will be focussed on communication and critical thinking and how these connect with math practices. These approaches will help you to prepare them for a successful career and quality of life by allowing them to engage as mathematical thinkers and empower and support you as parents to be facilitators of your childs' thinking and communicating.
This training is being custom designed with you and your homeschool roles in mind, and will align to our central and primary goals for our site in the coming three or more years, so I am hoping that all or at least most of our families will join us for this event and if both parents can make it, all the better!
Start times for the 90-minute training will be 9:00 am, 10:45 am and 1:30 pm. Pick the time that works best for you. Fliers and registration will be coming to you soon! If you are able to arrange childcare, so you can better focus, please do. If you need to or prefer to have your students work on school in the back of the room/gym, while you are in training, this will also be an option.
Let the Adventure Begin! (for grades TK-2)
"Good Books have always been the doorway to learning. That doorway leads growth and appreciation and an appreciation for the wonders around us. Come along on a learning adventure using picture books to open the door to art, history, vocabulary, geography, science, human relationships, applied math and writing!
No matter how young, children get a substantial educational head start from books. One series that we will soon share with TK-2 families was created to bring excitement and fun to learning and to enrich children's lives through wonderful children's literature. These materials are simple in concept, but rich in results. You will find that you become excited and interested in a variety of subjects too. You'll rediscover the joy of learning and you'll build a special bond between you and your student as the two of you go on a learning adventure together." This material is intended to be extremely flexible and provide a range of great ideas to choose from related to each children's story.
More details soon to come as I will be hosting parent training starting Sept. 20 and continuing on select Fridays mid-day (likely 11 am) for 90 minutes.
The first part of this gathering will be an opportunity to get some snacks and settle in with your fellow TK-2 home educators and then be introduced to some great materials and ideas for strategically developing: a love of learning, a love of reading, incidental learning, engagement and inquiry (students' tendency to inquire and be curious about their environment and making sense of it.) All of these are MAJOR game-changers in the life of your child's education. This is likely the most beneficial decision to use this resource in the first few years of homeschooling. They will love it, you will too, and it will build your confidence and likely think about homeschooling differently.
Please keep an eye out for a future parent square invite to sign up for the Sept. 20, Oct. 4 or Oct 18 parent workshops. We will have a lot of great materials and ideas to share and you will have a lot of freedom in considering how you use them. I will also share some great ways to check off a number of AWR requirements easily as you are having fun with your kids!
Look forward to seeing many of you soon,
Scott
