Second Grade At Twin Oaks
Fust Farm
Look at the fun that our fourth graders had at the Fustead Farm!
The field trip takes place as part of the Food for America program, a national initiative led by the Future Farmers of America that provides Agriculture Science high school students with the opportunity to mentor the fourth graders. The field trip provides a wonderful opportunity for elementary students to learn about the importance of agriculture, the latest ag science technologies, where their food comes from, and the important role our local farmers play. Throughout the day, the elementary students visited 17 stations where DCE Senior High students showcased farm animals, how to care for the livestock, the basics of milking cows and making milk, and the latest ag science technologies and farm equipment. The students also enjoyed a wagon ride.

Celebrating the Cultures of Riverside School
At Riverside School, we are excited to celebrate the diverse cultures that make our community unique! Throughout the school year, we will be highlighting a different culture each month, with a special event in May to bring it all together. We’ll begin by celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from October 1st to 11th.
Be on the lookout for a questionnaire that your child will bring home, which will help us learn more about your family's cultural background and how we can include it in our celebrations.
Let’s make this a year of learning and celebration!

Artsonia
Welcome back to school!
What a wonderful month it has been creating! This year, students will put their projects into Artsonia. Artsonia is a great program that allows students to see their growth and progress over the years and is free to use. Artsonia can also be shared with family and friends, near and far. I will have all students in kindergarten through 5th grade upload to Artsonia in art class. Students will be coming home with a sheet if you have not connected with Artsonia in the past, or you can scan the QR code. Please know that it is optional to connect, but it is wonderful to see their growth through the year! You can also browse to www.artsonia.com/parents and enter this Parent Code Y3K47PRW or scan the QR code attached.
September has flown and students have been busy creating in the art room! Students have been exploring Drawing and Collage, creating using different materials like oil pastels, texture plates, crayons, and more. Please ask your students about their art. Some great questions to ask your student about art are:
How did you come up with the idea for your art?
What inspired you?
What materials did you use for this project?
Did the project turn out like you envisioned?
How did you persist in your artwork?
If you have any trouble connecting, please reach out via email: rliethen@dce.k12.wi.us
Thank you!

Students listened to the story Only One You by Linda Kranz and created a fish that was unique to them! Did you know that Linda Kranz created the fish in this story by painting rocks? That is why they do not have tails in the story, or the fish we created! Our unique Riverside school of fish is quite unique.

WIN Groups Will be Starting
WIN Groups (What I Need) will be starting next week, so teachers will be reaching out to you to let you know what group your child will be participating in for the next 6-9 weeks. These groups are designed to provide a variety of instructional offerings to support students needs. Some groups will offer additional support activities, and others will offer additional enrichment activities depending on the needs of each student.

12 Tips to Reduce Your Child’s Stress & Anxiety
Testing time and the busy holiday season are around the corner. Anxiety symptoms are common in children and adolescents, with 10-20% of school-aged children experiencing anxiety symptoms. An even larger number of children experience stress that does not qualify as an anxiety disorder. So, how can you help to reduce your child’s anxiety and stress?
Encourage your child to face his/her fears, not run away from them.
Tell your child it is OK to be imperfect and make mistakes.
Focus on the positives.
Schedule relaxing activities.
Model approach behavior, self-care and positive thinking.
Reward your child’s brave behaviors.
Encourage good sleep hygiene.
Encourage your child to express his/her worry or anxiety.
Help your child to problem solve.
Stay calm.
Practice relaxation exercises with your child.
Never give up!
Holiday Assistance
As the holidays approach, please remember that we are here as a resource if you need assistance. Each year, several organizations offer help to DCE/Riverside families that are in need. Please do not hesitate to let either your child’s teacher, me, or our School Social Worker know if you are in a situation where you would benefit from assistance. I want to assure you that this is a very discreet, confidential process. Since hardships happen year round and not just at the holidays, remember that we are here to help any time. We have several resources that can assist with clothing (winter wear included), food and more. We care for ALL of our students and families here at Riverside and we would like to be able to help you find ways to meet your needs. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are glad to help!
