A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear PES families!
January gave us a brief reprieve from cold temperatures, which means we were able to make it outdoors for recess each day this week. This Monday, we have no school in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. day, a historical figure who made monumental strides to establish equal rights for all.
Celebrations of Learning! 🎉 In 2nd grade, students have been learning about erosion and experimenting using cornmeal to create eroding structures. Students from grade 5 traveled to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute this past week. They had a ride in a “fancy” bus and engaged in hands-on marine science learning. This week, we celebrated the start of winter kids with a whole school trivia game on morning announcements called, “Guess that Track!?” Students also received a play book and their first prize, a temperature and compass keychain. On Friday, students will be heading outside to partake in a winter kids learning activity.
Clubs! 🎠We have two new club opportunities for students coming up this late January. Starting January 27th, students from Morse High School will be running an after school homework club for students in grades 2nd through 5th grade. Email me to sign up. Starting January 29th, Phippsburg Rec will be hosting a Kids Theater Club. This is a six-week club that will take place from 8:00am to 9:20 on Wednesdays and will be open for first through fifth grade students. HW club is free to all students, and Theater Club is $75. There are only so many spots available, so spots will be first come first served. Please make checks payable to Phippsburg Rec Department.
SEL Learning! ♥️ Our January and February topic for social emotional learning will be self awareness and self management. Self awareness means naming our emotions and state of being, whereas self management focuses on using the skills we need to manage what we are feeling. Our students can use an “I” statement to name their feelings, and name a strategy to help them manage that feeling. For example, “I feel angry. I can take three deep breaths and count to ten.” Naming the feeling and applying a strategy helps students learn to self regulate in the most heightened states of emotions.
Here are some resources for parents.
