THINKING CORNER
Student Enrichment Resources - APRIL 2024
Our goal of this newsletter is to provide parents with supplemental resources to enrich their students' daily learning. Quality enrichment is often more about diving deeper into content rather than simply adding extra content. Our hope is that these resources can be used to challenge students and add some excitement and interest to their educational journey!
Teaching Strategies:
Brain Training: FUN Ways to Build Stronger and Faster Brains
One way to overcome weaknesses – whether academic, functional, or emotional – is the practice of brain training. That’s a simple little phrase to encompass physical exercises and game-like activities that build neurons and strengthen executive functioning skills.
Executive functioning skills like attention, memory, comprehension, processing, and logical thinking all work together to help us learn better, think better, and act better. Brain training is one of my go-to methods for working on any weakness in gifted kids. Of course, if there was a problem with spelling, I would utilize phonics, hands-on lessons, and spelling rules to specifically work on the issue. But, I would be working through brain training activities at the same time to build the muscles in the brain so that the phonics, hands-on lessons, and spelling rules have a better job of “sticking.”

Chrome Music Lab (Pre-K to 12th)
This virtual music lab allows students to create music and learn how music works. They can see what sound looks like, learn how melody works, create rhythms, turn drawings into music, and more. This is a supplemental resource rather than a music curriculum.

Parents of Twice-Exceptional (2e) K-12 Kids Virtual Meeting
May 2, 2024 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Twice-exceptional, or 2e, students have both high ability and potential as well as complex challenges such as learning differences, dyslexia, autism, ADHD, and anxiety.
In this group, we will:
– Connect with other parents of 2e K-12 students.
– Ask questions and get answers from parents who have been there.
– Learn how to advocate for our students at school.
The group is led by REEL co-founders Callie Turk & Yael Valek. REEL is a Bay Area Peninsula organization that strives to ensure that twice-exceptional students thrive in school by raising parent and educator awareness and understanding through resources, tools, events, and services.
