Supporting Students Who Are Grieving
Join us for a virtual parent session this Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 pm with clinicians from Fox Valley Institute on ways to support students who are grieving. These clinicians will share tips on what to expect when a student is grieving as well as information on things you can say, signs to watch for, and when parents should seek counseling support if sadness continues. Please click HERE to view the flyer and Zoom link.
- Monday, January 22nd Booster Meeting at 7:00 PM
Update on 8th Grade Orientation and 8th Grade Student Tours: Unfortunately our weather has not cooperated with us and our goal of getting to know our incoming freshman class and for them to know us. We will, however, incorporate orientation activities and finish our student tours that we began this week in the near future. More information to come!
5 Essentials Announcement: Beginning January 22, 2024, students in fourth through twelfth grade will have an opportunity to participate in the annual Illinois 5Essentials Survey as mandated by the Illinois State Board of Education. The district is required to complete the administration of this survey by March 29, 2024. The student form of the Illinois 5Essentials Survey focuses on perceptions regarding the supportiveness of the school environment and ambitiousness of instruction. The district and schools use information from this survey to enhance our understanding of the student experience in Naperville 203.
Individual student responses to this survey remain confidential; aggregate results will be published online in conjunction with the annual Illinois Report Card in the fall of 2024. The survey takes approximately 20-25 minutes to complete and will be administered online. If you would like your student to not participate, please complete and return the linked PDF to your school’s main office.
Thank you for your continued support and participation toward improving our schools!
Thank you for entrusting your students to our care,
Stephanie Posey
Principal
Updates from the deans, health office, and SRO.
Traffic and Pedestrian Safety at and around NNHS
During the winter months, pedestrians and drivers around 899 North Mill should exercise extra caution. Snow and sleet are often mainstays in the Midwest, and we want to make sure that our students and families get to – and leave – the building safely.
· Please use the correct routes for pick-ups and drop-offs. In the front of the building, please follow the campus supervisor’s direction (in the morning) to drive around the perimeter and pull-up to the front of the building before dropping off a student. Allow ample time, as the number of vehicles entering property tends to increase during inclement weather;
· Similarly, at the end of the school day, cars should form a line – and pick-up students from the front of the building. We don’t want students running and walking between cars that are trying to move throughout the line, nor do we want them in the front parking lot due to compromised visibility from row-to-row;
· Parents are encouraged to use the east lot (the “bus lot”) for drop-offs, after 7:15 AM;
· Please do not drop students off on Mill Street or Ogden Avenue. This is unsafe, as both streets around the school are two-laned;
· Drive slowly in school zones. Do not use your phone in school zones. Safety is a collective responsibility;
· Remember to be patient. Several students drive to the building each day, and they do not have the same level of driving experience as parents and teachers;
· Students who walk each day should be mindful of all traffic lights – and use designated crosswalks only. Running across streets at unmarked areas is a recipe for getting hurt. Remember to look both ways when crossing a turn-in or exit lane. We want to make certain that you are visible to all drivers who are coming to – or leaving – the building.
Lunch Hours at NNHS (Freshmen and Sophomores)
Recently, we have seen an uptick in underclassmen being “called out” for lunch. As you know, off-campus lunch is a privilege that is earned by juniors and seniors, and systems are in-place to facilitate their smooth exit and entry to the building. We do not have such protocols for freshmen and sophomores. The bar codes on their student IDs are disabled for this activity. As a result, a phone call must be placed by a parent, retrieved by school personnel, and logged into the Infinite Campus system. This often takes an extended period of time, as attendance clerks are busy recording student absences and appointments. We strongly discourage calling out younger students for lunch periods. If, for some reason, however, it is absolutely necessary, freshmen and sophomores are only allowed to leave with their own parent(s) – and from the front of the building. They are not allowed to leave with siblings, other parents, or alone. Deans of Students may inquire as to why freshmen or sophomores need to leave campus at all during the school day.
Students that have Blended Classes
NNHS offers an assortment of blended classes – classes that are a mix of direct instruction and independent or group study. These students will soon be receiving permission slips regarding “off days” – or those days when class is not officially in session. Parents may elect to give their child(ren) permission to leave campus during this time. If permission is granted, a second semester sticker will be affixed to the student ID so that campus security KNOWS that a particular student is allowed to leave the building. Please understand a student must drop off this ID (with the sticker intact) with campus security prior to exiting the building. If a student does not have a physical ID card, he or she will not be allowed to leave. Students in blended classes always have the option of remaining in the building and accessing common areas (the Learning Commons, for example) during this off-period.
NNHS does not accept food drops-offs
Naperville North does not accept food drop-offs for lunches. We do not have the proper storage for food in the front vestibule, nor do we have the personnel to deliver items to students. We do not accept food deliveries from local establishments, nor do we accept food from Uber Eats, DoorDash, or similar entities. Students should bring their lunch from home or access the many options that we have on-site.
Doctors’ Notes / Documentation for Illness, Chronic Conditions, or Planned Procedures
Parents should forward medical documentation directly to the Health Office and the certified school nurses. Absences due to verifiable medical conditions do not count against the student attendance cap. Please keep in mind that medical information that typically accompanies students receiving Special Education services or 504 accommodations should be updated frequently as well. The school nurses are Jo Volkening (A-Le) jvolkening@naperville203.org, and Pamela Seubold (Lf-Z) pseubold@naperville203.org.
Dress Up 203: Dress Up 203 believes every student should have the opportunity to attend their school dance in style. This organization is dedicated to making prom dreams come true for NNHS and NCHS students who do not have the means to afford formal attire. Their mission is to provide youth in need with the opportunity to attend their prom with confidence and style. They believe every young person deserves the chance to experience this memorable milestone without financial burdens.
Please help us thank our Platinum Partner PEACHES BOUTIQUE who is helping make this possible! We hope the entire community will support Peaches when they shop for their next dress. Please mention Dress Up 203 when you get your dress at PEACHES for your free Swag Bag as their way to say thank you.
