I Wish I Could Find A Blue Whale: Aarti Khanna
In recent research, about 98% of blue whales are endangered. There are only a couple of blue whales left in New Jersey. They are approximately about 400,000 lbs and 98 ft long which would make them the biggest animal species existing today. Blue whales mate by firstly rolling around each other. Then, they swim to the top of the ocean, and finally, they dive down into the deep abyss. They have only one child at a time, which is called a calf, every one to two years. Blue whales live far out into the ocean, so with our naked eye, it is extremely rare to find them. Even though I’ve never seen one, I know they are breathtaking animals.
In the world, there are only between ten to twenty-five thousand blue whales left. Blue whales are so important for many reasons. One reason is the blue whale helps keep our ocean clean. Without them, the deep blue sea would be filled with bacteria. Killer whales are the blue whale’s only predator. Without blue whales, killer whales would most likely also go extinct. Killer whales help the ecosystem by cycling nutrients from deeper in the ocean. Orcas are also known to save humans, and even make friends with them. Even though there is really only one animal that relies on blue whales, it would make an immense difference in our world.
There are many simple ways to help save blue whales. One thing you can do is to cut down on your carbon footprint. To do that is simple. All you have to do is reduce your use of electricity. Like, turning off the lights, minimize your plug load, and even take the stairs instead of an elevator. You can also start using less plastic products. Recently, there has been a plastic bag ban in New Jersey which is helping the ocean, including blue whales a ton. Now, only paper bags and straws are allowed in all towns over NJ which dissolve in the ocean. So, as you can see, you are already helping blue whales without even knowing!
