The Weekly Update #4
August 27th, 2024
Principal's Message
Wow! As September ends and October begins, I hope we are seeing the last of weather-related events for a while. Thank you for being so responsive as we worked through an early dismissal and remote learning day a couple of weeks ago and then another remote learning day on Friday. Despite all of that, our students and teachers have been working hard on beginning of year assessments, establishing classroom routines and diving into grade level curriculums. We find ourselves halfway through the first grading period. We were supposed to send home Interim Reports on Friday. You should receive those on Monday but please know that I am writing this blurb on Friday, as I watch the trees swaying outside, so I hope we are all back to a normal routine on Monday.
As we look towards October, we are excited that our third graders are going on a field trip, Tarheels Go Walking. Two classes will go on Tuesday and two classes on Wednesday. This is a field trip that our third graders look forward to every year as they tour local landmarks in downtown Wilmington.
I mentioned that we are halfway through the first quarter which also means that there is a day built into the NHCS calendar for parent-teacher conferences on October 11th. Be on the lookout for an invitation from your child's teacher to conference either on that teacher workday or another time that is convenient for you. Our school values strong family/school communication and we strive to have conferences with every family to review your child's progress so far and share resources to support student success.
Thank you so much to the PTA and our volunteers for hosting a successful fall book fair. Thank you to our media specialist, Mr. Foskey, for all you did with setting up, packing up, adjusting your lessons, etc. for this fundraiser to happen. This fundraiser provided $1,000+ to our PTA and $1,000 in books for our media center.
Keep SOARING RedHawks!

Would you like to represent our school on a Parent & Family Engagement Committee?
We have been asked to get 1-3 parents to represent Williams Elementary on a New Hanover County Schools committee and we would love to have YOU! This council will provide important input on Parent & Family Engagement policies and outreach, identifying areas of need in the district, and how we should use our federal funding to support those needs. The committee will meet 1 time per month from 9:00-10:30 at the Board of Education Center. The first meeting will be held on September 27th. The other meeting dates are: Oct. 25, Nov. 22, Jan.24, Feb.28, Mar.28, Apr.25 and May 30. If you are interested or would like more information, please email Mrs. Lennon, principal at janna.lennon@nhcs.net.

We still have 189 students whose B.O.Y. paperwork has not been completed. This has to be updated each year to confirm that the information that we have for your student is correct. Phone Numbers, emergency contacts can all be updated here. FERPA, Technology permissions, and Military connections must be updated each year. After you update your child in scribbles, the next step is to begin the online BOY paperwork. to begin click here. If you don't receive a confirmation number, you did not complete the paperwork.
Student Support Services
The 2024-2025 NHCS Student Handbook on Code of Conduct, Discipline, & Annual Notifications is published and available under the quick links on the NHCS website. Although it is linked in the Beginning of Year Application through Scribbles, please be sure to highlight the Student Code of Conduct and Annual Notifications with your families.
