Newsletter 2 Term 3
Onerahi School Friday 30 August
Te Karere o te Tumuaki/Principal's Message
Kia ora e te Whānau,
We are just over halfway through the term and thank goodness we are seeing some warmth and sunshine to get rid of all the nasty bugs that have been floating around. There has been a lot of excitement in our kura, with Cross Countries, hikoi out in the community, Kapa Haka rōpu wananga, and of course lots of regular classroom learning. Ask your children about their learning with Tessa in the STEAM room, it is a great addition to the opportunities for our tamariki.
Teachers have been engaging with the new draft Mathematics curriculum and will soon be looking at the draft English curriculum. We will be providing feedback to the Ministry of Education on the presentation of the document. As we work with it in classes over the rest of the year, there will be an opportunity for us to feed back to the Minister on the actual content.
We recently had a visit from our Education Review Officer (ERO) and we should have the draft evaluation report by the end of this term or early next term. We have been engaged in this process with her for 4 years now, and it has been a positive and encouraging experience.
I hope you all enjoy a relaxing weekend, take care.

Meet Hugo
This week, Onerahi Primary welcomed a new addition - Hugo. Hugo may be found onsite 2-3 days a week, under the watchful eye of Mrs MacGregor. He is extremely well-behaved and well-mannered and will be a wonderful companion for those needing a little time and space to regain their calm.

Kia ora e te whānau,
In week 4 we celebrated Aotearoa school library week with lots of fun library related activities. As always, the highlight of the week was the Book Character parade on Thursday the 15th of August. It was an amazing day full of laughter and fun. A lot of effort was put into costumes by our ākonga and their whānau, which resulted in some awesome costumes. Our tamariki are always excited to see book characters brought to life, a big thank you to everyone who helped make the day so much fun.
Congratulations to the following spot prize winners:
Finley Lockie, Millie O'Gorman, Hazel Prouting, Thomas Potter, Billy T, Elliot Gibbs, Harriet Caston, Mia Wells, Jack Ferris, Jayden Ferris, Jarryd Lomas, Finn Collecutt, Patrick Dearn, and Whaea Susan.

Life Ed Caravan
From the 7th to the 20th of August, we were lucky to be able to host the Life Education Caravan. Educator Nadine dedicated time to each of our classes to cover topics such as: how to fuel our bodies, responding to situations, our own identity - including goals and values and how we can be an upstander every day (age-relevant). Not only are these sessions informative, but often a lot of fun too. Thanks to the Life Education Trust and Nadine for bringing this programme to us, once again.
Found Property
We have an overabundance of found property at the moment! Are you missing shoes, socks, jumpers or other assorted clothing? Maybe your lunchbox or drinkbottle went walkabout? Come check out the stash in Rm 23's foyer, you may be able to be reunited! It is a lot easier to locate items when they are named.
Keeping our students safe when arriving and departing school
Senior leadership and the Board are currently working with the council to establish a safe travel plan. More information will come out in due course.
2nd hand Uniform
We are still a bit light on most of our secondhand uniform supplies. If your child has outgrown their uniform and you have no further need of it, please feel free to drop it in to the school office. The sales of these help the school purchase additional items that our former PTA used to supply, such as sunscreen, etc.
Honey
We have a great stock of honey available for purchase at the school office. Honey has been kindly donated by our partner beekeepers - Tahi honey, and we have further been gifted larger sized jars of Honeyeater honey - also from local Pataua hives. The honey is priced amazingly from $5 per jar to $20 (the big 1 kg jars) so why not pop in and pick some up. Not just yummy, its great to have on hand when winter bugs hit!

WINTER
Winter is here! In term 3 it's a great idea for students to bring a change of clothes each day, just in case they find their way into muddy puddles or get caught in a downpour. The KidsCan raincoats may be worn as part of their uniform and we recommend covered shoes and socks. As always, please make sure all personal items are named.

8:15am School gates open to students and whanau
9:00am School begins
11:00-11:30am 1st Play Break

There are two eating breaks within the day, taken at times that suit each class. Please ask your child's teacher when their times are. We would like to remind all whānau that during school hours, your child is expected to be present and learning. Where possible, we ask that appointments be scheduled outside of school hours, so as not to impact on your child's learning. We also ask that every effort is made to arrive at school in time for learning at 9am.
IMPORTANT NOTICES/TINO PANUI NUI
Medication: If your child requires medication to be brought or kept at school, please be aware that due to health and safety concerns, this must be kept secure in the school sick bay. It is not to be kept in children’s schoolbags during the day. This is to protect the safety of not only the child requiring the medication but also all other students. All medication requires an accompanying permission/approval form signed by their parent or caregiver. This includes epi-pens for allergy management, inhalers for asthma or any other medication your child requires on a short-term or as needed basis.
