Abraham Lincoln School Newsletter - October 25, 2024
A Note From Mrs. Shaw...
Dear Abraham Lincoln Families,
We are all excited for the upcoming Halloween holiday next week. We will be having our first book fair of the year at school on Halloween. Please see the flyer that came home in your student's folder or the one included in this newsletter for more information.
It is important for all families to note that we do not wear costumes to school on Halloween. Please save them at home, including accessories for costumes, for your Halloween evening festivities. Some costumes can be frightening to other students, most are distracting, and we do not want parts of costumes getting lost or damaged prior to Halloween. We appreciate everyone's cooperation and assistance making this a wonderful day for students.
SAVE THE DATE!
You will be hearing from your child's teacher soon regarding the scheduling of parent/teacher conferences. Parent/teacher conferences will be held on Monday, November 25 and Tuesday, November 26. There is no school for students that week, 11/25-11/29, due to Parent/teacher conferences and the Thanksgiving holiday. Parent/teacher conferences are an opportunity for parents to learn about your child as a student and hear more about your child's strengths and challenges at school. Your child's teacher will share with you the results of the beginning of the year assessments and action plan for continued adequate academic, social, and emotional growth throughout the school year. Students whose parents are involved in their child's education generally are more successful in school. We look forward to inviting you into the classrooms to engage in these meaningful conversations with teachers.
Best,
Shannon Shaw, Principal
School Attendance is Important
Our school goal is reaching 95% daily average attendance every month. Our school's attendance for the month of September was 95.5%. Well done, Everyone!
So far in October, our average daily attendance is only 94.8%. Let's do our best to all be here at school every day next week to finish October strong!
Mileage Club at Abe Lincoln
The Abraham Lincoln School is excited to be offering a new running club called Mileage Club. Mileage Club allows students to run laps, to set goals, and to be rewarded with tokens for reaching preset milestones. The program piggybacks on the widespread research on physical activity and academics. Research tells us that physical activity increases learning readiness, fights childhood obesity, increases oxygen to the brain, and promotes lifelong health.
During PE classes, students have been working on tracking their laps that they run and walk using our new EZ Scan program. Students scan their barcode each time they complete a lap. Students will also be able to scan their barcodes during our upcoming Turkey Trot in November to really rack up their mileage. Mr. Pangburn has set up an obstacle course for students to complete during part of each PE class and students run and walk while they track their laps.
We want to sincerely thank Amanda Junkins, a representative of Maine SNAP-Ed and Abe Lincoln parent, in collaboration with Healthy Eating Active Living(formerly 5210), for coordinating the implementation of Mileage Club at Abe Lincoln and ensuring the program's success through grant funding and much of her own time.

Head Lice Reminder
It’s time to start checking your children’s scalp. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
★ Do daily head checks.
★ Teach children to avoid sharing things that have been on or near another child’s head, including hair brushes, combs, hats, helmets, towels, scarves, coats, sweatshirts etc.
★ If your child has long hair pull it back into a ponytail for school.
★ Regularly clean things that your child’s head has direct contact with, such as car seats, pillows, headphones, etc., especially if you are sharing these items with other children.
★ As tedious as it may be, you must comb and remove nits for at least 2-3 weeks.
★ Head lice can be resistant to over the counter treatment, for example, RID and NIX. As a result these treatments may not be effective in treating head lice. If you have used these over the counter treatments and they have not been effective, please contact your physician or school nurse for alternative treatments.

**REMEMBER WATER BOTTLES**
A reminder for students to bring their water bottles to school every day. Hydration is crucial for their well-being and concentration in the classroom.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students refreshed throughout the day.
**We are graciously accepting donations of small paper or plastic cups for students to use to access water when they forget to bring their water bottles to school. THANK YOU!!**
