SOS Information 2023
The adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions—difficult for students, their parents, and educators. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. Depression—which is treatable—is a leading risk factor for suicide. In addition, self-injury has become a growing problem among youth.
To proactively address these issues, Springman is offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training as part of the SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program. The program aims to increase help seeking by students concerned about themselves or a friend. SOS is listed on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices and in a randomized control study, the SOS High School Program showed a reduction in self-reported suicide attempts by 40% (BMC Public Health, July 2007).
Our goals in participating in this program are straightforward:
To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness
To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential suicidality in themselves or a friend
To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns
To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help, if they need it
This program will be presented during the months of September and October. 7th Grade will participate on September 13th, 8th grade on Sept 20th for 8th, and 6th grade on October 4th. Click on the link below for more information.

September 14th - Drill Day
The safety and security of our students and staff are of paramount importance. To ensure that everyone is well-prepared in case of emergency situations, we will be conducting a Drill Day on September 14th. This includes fire drills, lockdown drills, and shelter in place. Please rest assured that this is a routine procedure designed to enhance the safety of our school community.
We understand that the safety of our students is a shared responsibility, and these drills help us to be better prepared. We encourage you to discuss these drills with your student(s) to ensure they understand their importance and the procedures involved.

#BeWell34 News From Our Health Office
As we get closer to flu season, we want to remind families about our health and safety protocols. It is difficult for a child who is not feeling well to learn. It's best for them to stay home until they are well enough to have a positive, productive and healthy school experience. Please keep your child at home if they have:
- Fever (temperature of 100.4°F or greater)
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Undiagnosed rash
- Communicable diseases
- Pink eye
- Head lice infestation (live head lice)
There are many reasons your child could be sick, from cold and flu to COVID-19, strep throat to RSV, and oh, so much more.We encourage you to have your child evaluated by a healthcare provider to determine the cause of and best treatment for their illness.
Before a student may return to school, he/she must be free of fever, vomiting and/or diarrhea (without fever-reducing medication) for 24 hours. If a student has been prescribed antibiotic medication for a rash, communicable diseases and/or pink eye they may return to school after completing 24 hours of prescribed medication.
Dental Exam due for all 6th graders
In the first two-weeks of October, District 34 is bringing Orland Park Dental Services (OPDS) to our schools to provide dental exams to any of our students who need it. The State of Illinois requires students in 6th grade to submit proof of a dental exam. OPDS provide dental services to children on public aid as well as those with private dental insurance.
