What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
Thirty years ago, 18-year-old Heather Johansen mysteriously disappeared from a country road. When she was found dead in the woods four days later, nobody in the town knew why she had been killed and by whom; the killer was never captured, and the trail went cold. A few months later, Sarah Crosswhite, also eighteen, died under eerily similar circumstances. This time, a "psychopath" was apprehended and charged with both crimes, although he vehemently denied committing either.
Now decades later, Sarah's older sister Tracy has become a homicide detective, and has returned to her hometown so that she and her husband can refurbish his parents' old house. Although technically on maternity leave, Tracy is called back into service by the former Chief of Police, once retired, who has been forced back into his former position by a new murder, that of his replacement's wife.
Attorney Dan O'Leary, Tracy's husband, has returned to town as well, in connection with a Cedar Grove redevelopment plan which may be pushing an illegal agenda. Soon, their cases coincide, putting both in the path of dangerous men who have too much at stake to give up.
I could hardly put this book down, two nights in a row! It was compelling to the point of obsession, and I loved every minute! Goodreads gave it 3.8 out of 5, but I gave it a much higher score of 9/10. Dugoni has hit the bullseye! "A Cold Trail" is available at the Vinton Public Library with no waiting list at present.

'Louder Than Hunger,' written by John Schu, is a moving novel in verse about a middle school boy named Jake. Jake shares an honest and raw outlook on his struggles with anxiety and anorexia. The only person that Jake shares a connection with is his grandma, and looks forward to their special Saturdays of music, books and theater. Jake is sent to Whispering Pines for therapy after his mother takes him to the doctor. John Schu takes us along Jake's time spent at Whispering Pines and we learn about his struggles, pain, and healing. Check this book out and you will be rooting for Jake.

If you love reading a great cozy mystery novel, then The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman is a must read.
Oh, how I want to meet the members of The Thursday Murder Club at Coopers Chase Retirement Village. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim, and Ron are all brilliant, charming, and hilariously witty. While they gather weekly in the Jigsaw Room to discuss cold case murders, our four friends get thrown into live action when a land developer is murdered within their peaceful community. This is a real “who murdered who” mystery with so many twists and turns it leaves you not only guessing but laughing, all the while discovering a bit more about our super sleuths’ own lives. Just like Detective Chief Inspector Chris Hudson and PC Donna De Freitas realize, one should never underestimate the elderly. Can you guess who the killer is before the truth is revealed?

Every time a Freida McFadden book becomes available at the library, I'm top of the list to read it! The Boyfriend was an excellent read. I kept trying to guess the ending, but as usual, I was way off. Sydney Shaw is a single, 34-year-old accountant living in New York City. She's trying to find that special someone through a dating app. After a horrible date that kept going wrong, a Mystery Man comes to Sydney's rescue, and a slow burn ensues. This new mystery man is mysterious and intriguing. But something is off with Mr. Perfect. After a close neighbor is found brutally murdered, Sydney can't help but be suspicious of everyone around her--including her dream boyfriend. 11/10 definitely recommend.

Children's literature contains some of my favorite adventure stories; Christina Soontornvat's novel 'A Wish In The Dark' is no exception! It's a retelling of Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables' set in Thailand. We meet Pong, born into captivity in Namwon Prison, and Nok, determined to do what's right at all costs. A Newberry Honor Book, this is the perfect book to share with the young readers in your life. The gentle tie-in to such a well known classic is also refreshing. If you enjoy this book, I would also highly recommend 'The Last Mapmaker' by the same author.
"An important book that not only shines a light but also shows young readers how to shine their own. Luminous." ~Booklist (starred review)
Happy reading!
~Kelly
