ÉCKS NEWSLETTER
MARCH 2025
ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE
Dear ÉCKS Families,
As we move into the spring season, we have several important updates and reminders to share with you!
First, we’d like to extend a huge thank you to our basketball coaches for their dedication and hard work throughout the season. Their commitment to our student-athletes has made this season a success, and we appreciate everything they have done to support our students both on and off the court. Badminton season is now officially underway!
It’s also survey season, and your feedback is important. Grade 7 students have received an envelope with information regarding the Alberta Education Survey, which provides an opportunity for parents to share their thoughts. In addition, BRSD has shared a survey with parents, and we encourage you to participate as well.
Please also take a moment to look at our CHROMEBOOK SURVEY as we seek to gather information from our school community about technology use and needs. Your feedback will help guide decisions as we move forward.
With warmer weather upon us, we would like to offer a gentle reminder for families to send their children with extra socks and/or clothing as the snow melts and outdoor activities increase. Additionally, please be extra cautious during drop-off and pick-up times. As the weather improves, more students will be walking or riding their bikes to school. Please be mindful of traffic and always be aware of students crossing the roads.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and let’s make the most of the final months of this school year!
Warm regards,
The ÉCKS Administration Team

ÉCKS CHROMEBOOK SURVEY
At ÉCKS, we are considering a 1:1 Chromebook approach to enhance our students' learning experience and ensure equitable access to technology for all. What this would mean is we would be asking students to bring their own Chromebook as part of their school supplies.
As we explore this initiative, we want to gather valuable feedback from our school community. Your insights will help us ensure that every student has the right tools for success, while also addressing important considerations such as managing repair costs and supporting digital citizenship. We are committed to making thoughtful, informed decisions that benefit our students and their educational journey. Our first step is to gather your feedback before moving forward. If you would take a couple minutes to answer these couple of questions it would be greatly appreciated.
Please join us at the next...

SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE
February 28, 2025
Dear Parents and Guardians of BRSD:
Subject: February Updates
As February comes to a close, let’s take a moment to reflect on significant activities and opportunities in our division throughout the month.
We thank those of you who have already completed our BRSD Education Stakeholder Survey. We have over 200 families who have responded. The results will be used to refine our Education Plan, and individual schools will be able to use their results for their planning. The survey link is here. The password was shared by the school. Please contact the principal if you need it.
As a reminder, parents and guardians of Grade 4, 7, and 10 students will receive information from your school regarding the Assurance Education Survey, which started mid-February and will continue until March 21, 2025. Your time to provide feedback is appreciated and critical in helping us set goals and strategies for the upcoming year. We value your input and rely on it to best meet the needs of our students and families.
We are excited to share that we host a dynamic learning day for our Grades 4 to 12 SAVY students on February 6. Young leaders from across the division assembled to collaborate, share ideas, and discuss meaningful ways to support their peers and schools. It was inspiring to see their passion and commitment to making a difference.
On February 13 and 14, our teachers participated in the annual Teachers’ Convention, a valuable opportunity for professional growth, collaboration, and learning. This convention allows educators to connect with peers, explore innovative teaching practices, and engage in sessions aimed at enhancing the learning experiences of all BRSD students.
On February 26, BRSD schools participated in Pink Shirt Day, a day dedicated to promoting kindness, respect and inclusion. Students and staff wore pink to stand united against bullying and to celebrate the importance of creating safe, inclusive welcoming environments. This annual observance reminds us of the power of kindness and the impact we can have when we work together to build positive school communities.
In closing, we are proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our students and staff throughout February. As we look forward to March, we anticipate even more opportunities for growth, achievement and connection.
Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting the success of every BRSD student.
Sincerely,
Rhae-Ann Holoien
Superintendent of Schools
BUSING ELIGIBILITY CHANGES
At the February Board meeting Trustees discussed the significant impact of Alberta Education's new transportation eligibility changes, which will increase the minimum distance for busing eligibility from 1 km to 1.6 km for students in Grades 1 to 6, effective for the 2025-26 school year. This change will affect a substantial number of BRSD students, requiring adjustments to transportation planning and operations.

ÉCKS HOSTS SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED GAMES BASKETBALL EVENT
Media Release: Posted on: Feb 27, 2025
Battle River School Division’s (BRSD) École Charlie Killam School (ÉCKS) proudly hosted a special afternoon of basketball and inclusion on February 26, 2025. The ÉCKS gym was alive with energy as Unified Games athletes from BRSD took to the court for a thrilling 3-on-3 unified basketball game.
This lively event brought together members of Special Olympics Camrose, Camrose Kodiaks, and local students, showcasing fast-paced action, sportsmanship, and a spirit of inclusion that left everyone smiling.
The full-court game featured impressive three-pointers, exciting dunks, and dynamic teamwork, with players supporting and celebrating each other’s efforts at every turn. The event highlighted the power of sport in building bridges between athletes of all abilities while reinforcing the importance of inclusion in the community.
Camrose Kodiaks team member, AJ Schaaf, spoke to the importance of inclusion and the impact an event like this can have on a community.
“Opportunities like this are very important for the community to model inclusion for all,” said Schaaf. “It’s a cool experience for everyone involved and demonstrates to younger students that the community really values everyone. This is what the Kodiaks represent. It’s something we really value getting behind with our people and our logo. Inclusion is for everybody.”
Camrose Kodiaks team captain, Owen Lansing, also shared insight on teamwork and values, emphasizing how fostering inclusive relationships is self-rewarding.
“Getting the chance to interact with these kids is super important to us and our organization,” said Lansing. “Not knowing what may be going on in their lives, our goal is to always make them feel included and important in whatever we may be doing together.
“As hockey players, we’ve always been taught to lean on our teammates and figure out the best way to approach things as one, and this allows us to teach them some of our values. The fact that for some of them, having us come to do these things is the highlight of their day—and that people they may have never met can leave that big of an impact—is extremely rewarding and humbling to us.”
BRSD and ÉCKS join together in extending overflowing gratitude to Special Olympics Camrose, Camrose Kodiaks, and all BRSD students and staff who made this event a success. The unified basketball game was not just about competition. It was about community and connection; ultimately, creating a future where everyone feels valued.
PARKING LOT
We kindly request that parents and guardians refrain from entering the staff parking lot unless they need to visit the school. We attempt to keep the parking lot clear for accessibility reasons and our Handivan. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our school safe!
ATTENDANCE
Being "on time" for class is directly linked to student academic success.
Our doors open at 8:30am for students. Cougar Time attendance is taken around 8:40am and during each period throughout the day. A complete bell schedule can be found on our website under About > Bell Schedule.
ATTENDANCE IS TAKEN FOR EVERY PERIOD THROUGHOUT THE DAY
This is new for some of our students. Please remind your student the importance of being on time to each individual class. Students that are not present more than half of a period are marked absent for that block. Guardians will receive phone communication once in the morning if their student has been marked absent for the start of the day. Guardians may view their students attendance breakdown on PowerSchool.
ABSENT OR LATE STUDENTS
Please inform the office if your student will be absent. The office is responsible for daily attendance, so please be sure to contact us by either calling (780) 672-7785 , emailing cksgenvm@brsd.ab.ca or filling out the website contact us form.
Students must check-in at the office if they are late and must check-out at the office if they are leaving early for the day.
CLASSROOM DISRUPTIONS - SCHOOL DAY PICK-UPS
We are kindly asking parents to respect class time. With close to 500 students in our building we attempt to keep class time interruptions minimal. We understand that emergencies can happen and you may be required to pick-up your child with short or no notice, we will kindly assist you. However, please contact the office with advanced notification when possible when needing to pick up your student early or provide a phone message. We thank you in advance for your assistance in keeping classroom disruptions low.
POWERSCHOOL PARENT PORTAL

RYCOR
ÉCKS is a fully digital school. All payments and field trip forms must be completed online.
Current field trip information is shared daily with students on the announcements!
To create or access your Rycor account go to the link below or go to the ÉCKS website. At the bottom of the home screen click on the large red button titled “Online Payments & Ordering”.
Use the "create account" option.
Once you have created an account, you will need to add your child as a student. You will use their student number which can be found on PowerSchool or an Alberta Report Card.
Once your student is attached, you will click on their name to access the fees. Fees you wish to pay need to be added to cart. Check out and make the payment. You may make a partial payment on the payment screen. Edit the amount, and proceed.
Permission Forms - An email will be sent out if it is just a permission form, with the Rycor link, identifying which icon to use, and the details of the field trip (who, where, when, etc). Please pay attention to the deadline! This will also be how you are notified if there is a fee associated with the activity.
Access the form and the fee by clicking on the appropriate icon on the bottom of your student's page. This will open the form. Fill in the 3 fields that are blank and hit “submit” in the bottom right corner of the form. This will put the form in the cart. Once the form is in the cart, you will need to submit it again by clicking on the "confirm" button on the checkout page of your cart. Without this step, the form has not been submitted. If you have successfully submitted the form, you will be able to see it in the completed form sections in your account.
Please note that if there is a fee with the form, the fee has to be submitted and the form has to be completed (signed) and confirmed before your child will be registered for the trip.
Also please note that the forms can have an expiration date. This is so that we can pay for tickets, plan transportation, arrange subs for students not attending, etc.
Ordering - Hot Lunch must be ordered through Rycor. Email reminders are not sent out for these. Please read the school newsletters and have your child pay attention to morning announcements for deadlines.
Deadlines - THE FORM WILL DISAPPEAR AFTER THE DEADLINE AND YOU WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO SUBMIT THE PERMISSION FORM, ORDER HOT LUNCH OR PAY THE FEE.
