LUCKY DUCKS!
LPS kindergarten, first and second grade students spent several spring weeks studying the life-cycles of living things. They patiently observed duck eggs, tadpoles, and larva, respectively, as they went through various stages on their way to becoming ducklings, frogs and butterflies.
In kindergarten classrooms (shown here), little yellow ducklings recently pecked their way out of their shells. The children welcomed these fuzzy wonders into their classroom with love and plenty of gentle, hands-on affection.
Meanwhile, first graders closely monitored tadpoles as they underwent metamorphosis, transforming from fishlike swimmers into froglets. In second grade classrooms, students witnessed the stages of butterfly metamorphosis.
In all three instances, the experience offers interdisciplinary connections as part of the science curriculum. Children not only make scientific discoveries, but also incorporated language skills by writing about the process, and math skills through activities such as weighing and measuring.
