CompSci Weekly
October 14, 2024 - October 18,2024
Principal's Message
Dear CompSci Middle Community,
I hope you all had a great week, things were pretty busy here. Clubs and athletics are filling up the building in the afternoon and it is great to see the kids enjoying the activities. Next week is busy as well, but I admit--that's they way we like it here! We have also spent a lot of time this week going over Mindset scores with students. If you haven't received the report, please check you email. Reach out if you didn't get it.
Next Thursday we are holding STEM night at 6:00. It is a great chance to come have fun doing different activities. Right before that I will be holding the first PTO meeting of the year. even if you didn't sign up for PTO, please feel free to join us. The PTO meeting will be at 5:30 and on zoom, if you aren't coming to STEM night. the zoom link is : https://crec.zoom.us/j/91955087665. Please join us.
As a reminder, there is no school in honor of Indigenous People's Day. At CREC we start our meetings with a Land Acknowledgement to recognize that people already lived her, long before it became Connecticut. I will share this with kids next week, but wanted you to see it too, so I please see the portion of this after my signature line.
That's all the news for this week.
Enjoy the weekend,
Jill Wnuk
Principal
Land Acknowledgement:
We would like to begin by acknowledging that the land on which we gather is the ancestral territory of the Tunxis, Sicoag, Pocumtuc, Wangunk, Poquonook, Podunk, Quinnipiac, Massacoe, and Hammonasset Peoples who have stewarded this land throughout the generations. We also acknowledge the five state & federally recognized tribal nations that exist in Connecticut today: the Mashantucket Pequot, Mohegan, Golden Hill Paugussett, Eastern Pequot, and Schaghticoke people. We support their sovereignty as tribal nations now and into the future.

S.O.A.R Corner
At CompSci we are recognizing the amazing students in various ways throughout the course of the year. S.O.A.R is our mantra in our building and we discuss S.O.A.R throughout the day. S.O.A.R stands for Showing Leadership, Embracing Opportunities, Excellence in Academic Achievement and Demonstrating Resiliency.
Each Mindset Cycle we recognize students with S.O.A.Ring Eagle Cards, S.O.A.Ring to Success Certificates and Regal Eagle Mindset Awards. Parents and guardians also note that each team is also recognizing students in various ways throughout the year as well. Moving forward at the end of each cycle we will be sharing the names of the S.O.A.Ring to Success Certificate Winners and the Regal Eagle Mindset Winners.

CREC’s Statement of Diversity and Inclusion
“Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) is an intentionally diverse social justice organization whose members work to acknowledge, respect, and empathize with people of all different identifiers, such as race, socioeconomic status, gender identity and expression, education, age, ability, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, language, nationality, and religion. In accordance with CREC’s mission of equity, excellence, and success for all through high-quality educational services, our staff and students commit to participate in and support ongoing equity and inclusion programming through curricular and co-curricular offerings, professional learning, and local and national partnerships. Moreover, CREC staff and students strive to understand and confront the symptoms and causes of systematic oppression—ranging from implicit biases to micro aggressions to discriminatory policies, practices and traditions—that benefit privileged groups. While at CREC, staff and students commit to affirm and honor the lived experiences of others, to willingly challenge inherited beliefs and ideologies, and consequently learn, grow, and serve.”
