September 13, 2024

Week 3: September 13, 2024
Sandy Spring Field Trip
Last week students received a letter to take home and a permission slip sharing our upcoming 6th grade Team Berlin trip to Sandy Spring. The purpose of the trip is for students to get to know each other and to have some team building and bonding time. Team Berlin will go on their adventure on Wednesday, September 25. We will be gone all school day. Permission slips and money should be turned into Ms. Trenkle; she will collect it during Geography class.
Any questions about the trip should be directed to Ms. Gathers, our assistant principal, or Ms. Trenkle. Thank you for all who have turned in their forms and money to date! It is appreciated!

Classroom Updates
Earth Science with Ms. Ballantine
Hi scientists!
This past week students learned about how scientists carry out investigations by making observations and inferences, learning about different kinds of data, and exploring the steps of the scientific method.
Next week we will start the week with MAP testing. MAP testing is scored but not graded, and is a standardized test that helps give teachers and administrators a better understanding of students’ scientific knowledge. We will wrap up MAP testing on Wednesday and dive back into scientific investigations, learning about hypotheses and testable questions. Students will wrap up the week by designing and conducting an experiment using plants to practice changing variables and collecting data!
For homework, students will be assigned a variables practice worksheet, due Thursday 9/19. Students should study for Roots Quiz 1.3 which will be on Friday, September 20th. Roots 1.3 are:
Kilo
Grav
Luna
-ology
Astro
Keepers: uni, bi, tri, cent, graph, helio
A huge THANK YOU to the families who sent me things off my Amazon wish list-it felt like my birthday and I am so excited to use the supplies with your students!
Math with Mr. Brown & Mr. Gawthrop
This week students completed their Beginning of the Year (B.O.Y.) Assessment and began working on intro to ratios, and equivalent ratios. Attached to this newsletter is the Math Acceleration policy as students will receive BOY results in the coming weeks. This week students will continue working on ratios and begin looking at double number lines, and unit rates as they relate to ratios. Students will have a Formative (B) Assessment on Tuesday of this week. Please let students know that when completing reattempts or submitting late work students should email/message me to let me know their grade possibly needs to be adjusted.
Language Arts with Ms. Byrns & Mr. Gawthrop
This was a full week. Students completed their first Formative in Language Arts (an assessment that is more of a smaller mid-unit test rather than an end of unit Summative). You can see their work in Canvas and their scores are posted in Aspen. Students started identifying sensory language in their independent reading.
Students also completed the Beginning of Year MAP Reading Growth Test. We will be sharing more information about student scores and goals during our first round of student-led conferences.
Next week students will take a Sensory Language Formative, and we will incorporate figurative language into our growing narrative language study. We will primarily focus on metaphor, simile, personification and onomatopoeia.
Thank you to Evie’s family and another mystery donor for the new books for our classroom. We are currently on a graphic novel hiatus for independent reading as students need to be looking for examples of point of view, sensory details, dialogue and so on in their novels.
Things to ask your 6th grader about ELA:
- What are the 5 types of Sensory Language? Can you remember the academic (or fancy 😉) words for each of those? (Auditory/sound, Gustatory/taste, Olfactory/smell, Visual/sight, Tactile/touch)
- How many books have you logged for the 40 Book Challenge so far? If zero, then why?

Geography with Ms. Trenkle
This week in Geography we discussed the language of geographers and learned the basics of map skills, including using a compass rose and cardinal directions, using a legend/key, how to read a grid and longitude and latitude, and interpreting map scale. Students have a formative on these map skills on Monday and their summative test on Friday, September 20. Students have practice sheets for each skill and will receive more practice in different forms next week as well. We will call on these vocabulary words and skills throughout this year. It’s exciting to see students becoming Geo-students! :)
