Steele News Live
Steele News Live is a multi-year program that teaches students all aspects of TV news production. Our students produce and deliver daily, live, news shows for the entire school to view. In addition to learning how to anchor, students learn how to run an audio board, a switcher, prompters, studio cameras, and video editing software. They learn how to communicate as a team during show prep and during the live show itself. In the last five years that Steele News Live has entered the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Student Production Awards, SNL students have been nominated for nine awards across seven categories, and they have won two NATAS Regional Student Production Award Emmys, one for Best Newscast and one for Best High School Editor. Also, since they began entering the annual NPR Podcast Challenge in 2020, they have earned five Honorable Mentions. You can watch their live stream every day on their Boxcast or check out any past show on their YouTube Channel.

Mrs. Hoegler
Students in Mrs. Hoegler's English 10 class have been preparing for End of Course exams coming up in the spring. Students have been modeling how to write an informative essay by writing thesis statements as a class using Padlet, composing body paragraphs together, and working in small groups to write the most effective introduction and body paragraphs. They are feeling much more confident about this important assessment coming up!
Mr. Thompson
In Mr. Thompson’s Honors 10 ELA classes, students were asked to convert Dark Romantic short stories into original scripts last week. After scripts were written, the students had a day to rehearse in the Creative Learning Center, then presented their story to the class as a ten-minute skit. Each group brought classic stories like Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment to life with tons of energy, creativity, and passion. As they continue to explore the genre next week, students will be modeling Poe, Hawthorne, and Washington Irving as they craft their own Dark Romantic short stories.
Mrs. Allen
AP Language and Composition students in Mrs. Allen’s class have transformed what would have been a literary analysis essay on The Handmaid’s Tale into captivating TED Talks.
Students used their creativity and storytelling abilities to present their essays in a unique and engaging way by utilizing cutting-edge green screen technology. They were able to create visually stimulating presentations and immerse themselves and their audiences in various settings.
This project not only challenged the students to think outside the box, but also encouraged teamwork, critical discussion, and constructive feedback among their peers. This project exemplifies Amherst's commitment to fostering a dynamic and enriched learning environment, preparing students for success in the 21st-century landscape.
