Money Smart Week
Money Smart Week 2016 is only 6 weeks away! If your library is hosting a financial literacy program during the week of April 23-30, we want to hear about it. Please post your event on the Money Smart Week Partner site, or email the details to us and we will do it for you.
There is still time to schedule a program and the Money Smart Week RI website has a wonderful list of program ideas and contacts for you to explore, including banking programs for all ages from Home Loan Investment Bank and cyber security/online safety from the RI State Police Cyber Terrorism Unit. In accordance with Money Smart Week national guidelines, all programs are void of sales pitches and free to your library.
For more Money Smart Week RI resources, including the resource list, logos, the MSW 2016 Media Kit and links to the national calendar, please visit the new MSW RI website. If you have any questions, please email us at FLRT@rilibraries.org
Thank you,

From 5:30pm-7:30pm OLIS will be giving away books, offering a SRP related activity, and talking to families about the summer program happenings throughout the state. If you would like to participate in this event, either by offering an easy activity at the museum or by sending OLIS your SRP materials to distribute, let us know!
- New CE program to help you get ready for summer! Summer Learning Programs: GSLIS Student IdeaFest at the Rochambeau Library on May 7th, 9:30am-11:30am. Don't miss this opportunity to connect with GSLIS students who will be sharing their findings on summer learning programs. A book giveaway will follow the program. Registration coming soon.
Sponsorship to include on general SRP PR materials:
The statewide Rhode Island Summer Reading Program is supported by the RI Office of Library and Information Services, with funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services [and local library and local sponsors such as Friends groups, businesses, etc. if applicable].
- Please include the Pawtucket Red Sox, Citizens Bank, and Pepsi as sponsors only when promoting the All-Star Reading Team and finale event.
Unfortunately, the Office of Library and Information Services will not be able to move forward with a purchase of reading program software for this year’s Summer Reading Program. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused to your library.
Deadline for Requesting Kids Reading Across RI Book Sets
Schools have also been invited to request book sets for use in the library or classroom. These sets will be delivered to schools by the RI Center for the Book, however, if you're looking for a way to connect with school librarians you may want to offer to deliver the book sets yourself. Check-in with your local school librarians and tell them how happy you’d be to bring them free books! The link to the request survey for schools is: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KRARI16schools. Let me know if your school librarian has submitted a request and you’re planning to deliver their book set. Or you can check with me to see if a school in your area has submitted a request. I'll send your school's set to you through delivery.
Please consider participating in the May 7th kickoff event at the State House. It's a great opportunity to promote your library and summer reading program to families from all over the state. In the past libraries have had tables with activities related to the summer reading theme or the KRARI book. Your activity may be a craft, a STEM demo, or an interactive exhibit. Check out photos from last year's event and let me know if you'd like to participate.

How to Be Dangerous with Minecraft
They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but with Minecraft, you only need a little bit of knowledge to run a successful program where the young people are the experts and you are the facilitator. This workshop will cover technology requirements, suggestions for organization, and important choices you should make before you invest. After a one-hour presentation, everyone will have the opportunity to play Minecraft on library laptops, xbox, or tablets using the Cranston Public Library accounts. Making Presentations Pop with Tech
LOOKING TO SHAKE UP YOUR PRESENTATIONS? As librarians, we are advocates for our programs, spaces and jobs. Sometimes finding the right technology tool to help us communicate with stakeholders is very overwhelming. Some of the questions and thoughts we've had include:
"Where do I even begin?"
"I COULD just use PowerPoint . . . again."
"There are just too many choices!"
"Ok, I like this tech tool but how do I use it?"
This workshop will give librarians the opportunity to explore a few powerful presentation tools, empowering them to build upon their digital toolbox. Participants should bring their own device because there will be time to work individually and collaboratively to put the tools into action!
This workshop is part of the Media Smart Libraries program and is being offered in partnership with RILINK’s professional development series. The Media Smart Libraries program was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Attendance at this workshop could be applied to either the Access and Use, Create and Collaborate, or Take Action digital badge.

Many libraries have found that maker culture and makerspaces fit naturally with their existing missions, and have begun to incorporate makerspaces into the services they offer their communities. In this session you will have the opportunity to visit different makerspace stations to find out more about the kind of supplies, skills, and ideas you would need to start your own program. This workshop will be held during the School Librarians of Rhode Island Annual Conference. You may join the conference starting at 2:00 pm for this workshop at no charge. Librarians who have registered for the entire conference are welcome to join this session.
