It's that time of year. Our back to school energy is waning. Our new initiatives now seem a little daunting and overwhelming. Students are coming to you with pleas for extra credit to make up for the 9 assignments they forgot to do and now their grade isn't what they want it to be. 🙄

One of my favorite PDs I ever attended was about grading and feedback. It was titled something like, Quit Grading, so I was naturally intrigued as I carried two weeks of papers back and forth from school promising myself I would get to them.

Some of those seem obvious, others not so much, especially for your unique classroom.

My favorite advice was to let the computer grade everything that is multiple choice or one short answer - or let kids self check. Putting the assignment on Canvas or Google Forms instead of paper did take a bit of work upfront, but after 100+ kids turned it in, that was a lot less paper to carpool with. That then allowed me to

pick the important question(s) to grade by hand and give feedback.

I was able to pick just one or two math problems or one paragraph from a writing assignment to focus on that really displayed their learning of the standard.

I was able to take the time to type up a sentence or give specific feedback to really support that child's learning instead of hand grading 100 sheets of paper.

PearDeck lessons that give instant feedback

Kahoot gives instant feedback

Beep Audio - Extension that allows you to put voice comments in Google Apps (Classroom, Slides, Docs, Gmail)

Spreadsheet to mark days you meet with individual kids

Google Calendar events/reminders that schedule when to meet with individual kids or small groups to provide feedback

If they can Ask Alexa for the answer, it's not worth your time grading.

You can create a booking page that will allow you to set your schedule. It will give you a shareable link. Send that link to parents and they can click an appointment time and it will schedule it in your calendar. Only one person can pick each time so first come, first serve.

This video is made on a Samsung Interactive display, but we can do all these things on our SmartBoards or Viewboards!

I love watching some of these channels with real teacher given advice. I feel like I can always grab at least one piece of advice from each videl.
