Parkside Post
October 2024
Greetings Parkside Bullfrogs!
October has arrived and we are just a couple weeks away from the end of Quarter 1! We have no school tomorrow, October 3, while our teachers participate in professional development. We will also have no school for students on October 25 as teachers complete report cards and plan for the 2nd quarter!
Report cards will be shared with parents on October 28. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher to set up a conference. If you need a translator, that can be arranged.
We are also excited to announce our first Student Club Day on October 24! Students will sign up for a club of their choice to participate in once each quarter this year! Our goal is to support students' development of mind, body and spirit! Some of the clubs include Art Club, Kindness Club, Sports Club, Book Club, and many more!
Halloween falls on a school day this year but we do NOT permit students to wear costumes to school. Please do not send your child to school in a Halloween costume. Following Halloween, please be mindful of sending candy to school with your child. A few pieces in their lunch works well but please do not allow your child to come to school with their entire bag of candy from trick-or-treating. We appreciate your cooperation!
There is important information for parents to know in the newsletter, so please take a few moments to look through the information. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher or call the front office. We are here to help!

Morning Drop Off & School Start Time
Drop off starts at 7:30am. Please do not drop your child off prior to 7:30 as there is no supervision. School starts at 8:05. Please have your child to school on time! Students being in their classrooms at 8:05 helps them start their daily routine without feeling rushed. Think about how running late for work impacts your own mindset as an adult! We want our students to feel confident and prepared to start each day!

Literacy & Learning
Happy October!
This month, we’re continuing to work on our reading skills within the classroom. Our focus is always to develop reading skills through fun activities and engaging books. Encourage your child to explore different genres—whether it’s adventures, mysteries, fairy tales, or even informational text.
Tips for Home:
- Set aside 20 minutes a day for reading.
- Visit the local library to discover new books.
- Ask your child questions about the story to boost comprehension.
- Practice sight words at home.
Let’s make reading an exciting adventure this month!
Math This Month
As we continue to move through the first quarter, remember to support your child at home with mathematical thinking. Some ideas are below on how you can help!
- Incorporate math into everyday activities: count steps, measure ingredients, or budget for a family outing.
- Practice math facts together: 5-10 minutes each day to boost fluency and confidence.
- Math Games: Play board games or card games that involve counting or strategies to enhance their problem-solving skills and fluency.
Thank you for your continued support in making math engaging!
Science Happenings
Science is in full swing at PSE. From kindergarten to fifth grade, all of our PSE scientists are working hard. Almost every grade level has had a chance to visit the STEM Lab for some fun hands-on science activities. Recently, kindergarten students stopped by to investigate a “mystery substance” using their five senses. Second graders were Myth Busters, investigating the relationship between mass and whether things sink and float!
Did you know that Parkside received its second Gold Level Championship designation from the Everglades Foundation! Last year was our second year participating in the program and we received Gold Level for the second year in a row! We are also proud to announce that we received an additional award, the FPL Environmental Stewardship Award for our efforts to work with local agencies in our Everglades education. In an effort to take our Everglades education efforts to new levels this year, a few of our teachers did something special. Two teachers from each grade level spent a day hiking through the Everglades! It is dedicated teachers like this that are making Parkside a leader in Everglades education in Collier County. PSE will be participating in the Everglades Champion program again this year, going for the three-peat gold! Be on the lookout for information about our PSE Everglades Week coming up in February 2025.
We will continue to recognize students for exemplifying our PSE Expectations...Prepared to Learn, Show Respect to Ourselves and Others, Be Responsible...We will also be recognizing our students for modeling the 7 Habits, as part of the Leader in Me Framework. Your child has learned the 7 Habits and will continue to use them at school and at home!
If you'd like to support the 7 Habits with your child at home, a great way would be to have a copy of the book, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids! Click the link below to purchase the book!
Media Center
Students have begun reading our new Sunshine State Young Reader books. The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Program is a statewide reading motivational program. The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency. Students in grades 2-5 can read the books and then take a quiz to earn Accelerated Reader points and fun Brag Tags. Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers will be able to read the stories to their classes after winter break. The books are available for you to check out at our local public libraries. Students who read three or more of this year’s books will be able to participate in a statewide vote for their favorite.

CAR SIGNS!
Please make sure you have a car sign in your vehicle every day. It significantly slows down our dismissal when we have to check IDs and verify approved pick ups. If you do not have a car sign, please come to the front office and we will provide one. You can also request multiple signs if you have different people picking up your child.
Walker Procedures for PreK, Kindergarten and First Graders
The safety of our students is a top priority. All preK, kindergarten and 1st grade students who walk home, need to be met at the walker gate by an adult who has the walker tag. Students will not be released without the proper walker tag being presented. If you forget your tag, our staff will call the front office to verify approved pick ups. The person picking up the child must have a photo ID to verify identity, if they don't have the walker tag. Students who walk home with older students, with parent permission, are permitted to leave.
Thank you for partnering with us to make Parkside a safe place for all!
