Message from Superintendent, Mary Ross
Dear Parents,
As we welcome the beautiful autumn season, we want to share some exciting updates and events happening at our school this October:
Homecoming Week: Many activities are being planned for the week of September 30-Oct 4th to encourage spirit! Dress up days, pep rally, bonfire, and our football game against Carrizozo.
Halloween Carnival: Join us on October 29th for our annual Halloween Carnival! There will be games, food, and fun activities for the entire family.
Parent-Teacher Conferences: Mark your calendars for October 17th from 4:00-7:00. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet with your child's teacher to discuss their progress and any concerns you may have.
**School Reminders:**
Weather: As the weather changes, please ensure your child comes to school dressed appropriately for cooler temperatures. A warm coat, hats, and gloves are recommended for recess.
Health & Safety: We continue to prioritize the health and safety of our students. Please remind your children to wash their hands frequently and stay home if they are feeling unwell.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. We hope you and your family have a wonderful October filled with joy and togetherness!
Warm wishes,
Mary Ross,

NATURAL HELPERS RETREAT @ BONITA
The Natural Helpers program provides training to students who have been identified as “listeners” by their peers and school staff. Natural Helpers are trained with helping and listening skills so that they may connect vulnerable peers to trusted adults and other appropriate resources.
Students continue to cultivate their robust social networks to implement service projects that aim to support connection with their peers during these times of isolation, and that provide resources to promote mental wellbeing.

Benefits of Eating Healthy Meals
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program operating in more than 94,000 public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to more than 30 million children each school day. It was established under the National School Lunch Act and signed by President Harry Truman in 1946.
Hondo Valley Public Schools is proud to provide FREE healthy and nutritious lunches and snacks to all students! Our elementary students are served by our cafeteria staff for each item from the cafeteria line and are welcome to request additional servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. However, due to limited staff and to ensure portion control and sanitation measures, elementary students are not allowed to serve themselves from the fresh salad bar. Middle and high school students also enjoy meals from the cafeteria line and have the opportunity to serve themselves from the fresh salad bar. We are committed to supporting the well-being of our students through nutritious meals every day!
- Boosts Concentration: Nutritious meals improve students' focus and cognitive performance, helping them stay alert during class.
- Supports Growth: A balanced diet provides essential vitamins and nutrients that are crucial for physical development and overall health.
- Promotes Better Behavior: Healthy foods can improve mood and behavior, reducing hyperactivity and enhancing self-regulation.
- Encourages Lifelong Habits: Offering healthy lunches and snacks teaches children the importance of making nutritious food choices that can last a lifetime.
