WILDCAT CONNECTION NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER 2024
Message from Mr. Monaghan:
Webster families,
We are off to a great start! Thank you for joining your student’s teacher at Back-to-School Night. When we work together, we can ensure the success of our students. Thank you to the teachers for planning so well and making the learning experiences fun for our students. As I speak to students on the playground, a common theme exists...students go on about how much they like their classrooms, friends, and teachers.
ST Math (Jiji) is a program that helps with conceptual understanding of the standards being taught in class. Combined with instruction, this increases the retention of math being taught. Students who can complete 20% of ST Math by November 4 (combination of classwork and homework) will receive a free dress day and a popsicle.
We all know attendance is extremely important. A lot more is missed in a day of instruction than can ever be replaced by a little make-up work. Thank you, families, for making sure your students arrive on time and are at school each day so they can get the most out of the great instruction at Webster. Also, the district loses about $50 of funding each day a student is out.
In September we worked on Growth Mindset as a school. When things get tough with homework, or your students say, “I can’t do this.” Try getting them to add the word “yet” to the end of that sentence and remind them that the harder we work at things, the better we become at doing them. This month we will be working on Empathy with all students. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
Looking forward to a great October,
Mr. Monaghan

Message from Mrs. Ortega:
Our scholarly trait for the month of October is Empathy. Students demonstrate empathy by showing care and understanding and identifying with the feelings and concerns of others. We recognize and celebrate students who go above and beyond in demonstrating each scholarly trait during our Monthly Pride Assemblies. Please join us in our conversations around empathy and speak to your student about why this scholarly trait is so important.
Our first Perfect Attendance/Cookie Club is Friday, October 11th. On this day students who had perfect attendance during the month of September will have free dress and receive cookies during lunch. Perfect Attendance is defined as no tardies, no absences(excused or unexcused) and no early outs. If your student earned Perfect Attendance for September your student will receive a certificate and free dress pass. Remember that every day counts!
PBIS
We are excited to share that Webster was recognized by the California PBIS Recognition System for successful PBIS implementation at the BRONZE level! Our school has worked extremely hard over the past two years in the implementation of PBIS and is proud to be one of two Long Beach Unified Schools recognized this year.
PBIS Mission Statement
Webster is a community that fosters student achievement through an environment of high expectations, collaboration, and P.R.I.D.E. in every Wildcat. Students are supported in attaining academic, behavioral, and social emotional success in a safe and nurturing environment in order to prepare our scholars to become adaptive, empathetic, and productive citizens.
We have a PBIS committee that has been working behind the scenes to improve the school community for our students. What does PBIS stand for? Positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) is a schoolwide systems approach aimed at establishing positive student culture and individualized behavior supports necessary to create a safe and effective learning environment for all students. Please see our mission statement and guidelines for success below as well as location expectations linked here. We are reteaching expectations for different areas around the school. These will be our expectations again in the fall and will be retaught once more at that time. We are excited to be able to provide this consistency across grade levels for all students as we move forward.
