🌞 MONDAY, APRIL 8TH - SOLAR ECLIPSE ATTENDANCE 🌑
We have received numerous questions, and rumors have circulated regarding student attendance on Monday, April 8, 2024, regarding the eclipse. This update serves as further clarification of yesterday's communication.
Student Attendance:
- If you are taking your child to another part of the state/out-of-state to view the eclipse, the district is approving educational trip request forms through today, Friday, April 5, 2024. Clarification: We are making a one-time exception to our three-day-in-advance policy by allowing forms to be submitted through today. We will not be making any exceptions after today. In other words, a form submitted for the eclipse at any time after today will NOT be approved, and the absence will not be coded for an educational trip (ET). It will also count towards any associated policies and procedures regarding absenteeism.
- Clarification:
If you wish to keep your child home for the day due to the eclipse as a normal absence (similar to being out due to illness), we will excuse the absence provided that you follow our normal procedures for reporting an absence - written excuse no more than three days after the absence. The absence will be coded as EX and count towards 10-day letters, etc. We are not granting "free days" or a Flexible Instructional Day.
- Clarification:
If you are planning to pick up your child early due to the eclipse, please provide written notification, including the time of the pick-up, the name of the person picking up, and the fact that it is due to the eclipse. Your child should submit their note to the homeroom/classroom teacher at the start of the day.
As stated earlier, these attendance options come with the understanding that there may be a need to make up missed assignments due to absence or dismissal.

Attendance
For ABSENCES that are for reasons other than illness as a vacation, a day trip, or a family visit, an EDUCATIONAL TRIP FORM must be completed and submitted to the school prior to the absence. Please do not use the online absence slip to report this type of absence. The form can be found here: BES EDUCATIONAL TRIP FORM.
**PHONE CALLS ARE NOT ACCEPTED FOR ABSENCES. PLEASE PROVIDE BOTH FIRST AND LAST NAMES OF STUDENTS WHEN SUBMITTING AN ABSENCE.**
For a LATE ARRIVAL, please email your student’s teacher and email the attendance mailbox directly at attendanceBES@boyertownasd.org.

For a FULL-DAY ABSENCE, please use the online slip (BES ONLINE ABSENCE SLIP ) or send in a note to the school that your child will be absent (please state the reason why).
UNLAWFUL ABSENCES: *If the school does not receive an email (or a written note) concerning an absence within three (3) school days of that absence, it will be coded as unlawful, and the Unlawful Absences letter will be sent to the parents/guardians. It will also be added to the student's file. *NOTE: We cannot remove an Unlawful absence after the three (3) school days have passed.
Each student may have a total of ten (10) excused absences per school year. Every absence after those ten absences will all require a Doctor’s Note.
You and your family are invited to our Title 1 Family Literacy Night! Please join us on Tuesday, April 30, at 6:30pm in the Middle School West cafeteria. After a brief presentation of our Title I programs, we will engage in a variety of literacy games for children and caregivers. Giveaways and snacks will also be provided! This program is open to families in our Title I schools only (BES, CES, EES, WES, and MSW). Childcare is not provided. Children in attendance are expected to stay with their families throughout the event. Space is limited so register soon using this link, or the one found in the attached invitation.
We are looking forward to a fun evening!

🩺NURSE NEWS🩺
School Physicals
If you’ve received notice that your child does not have up-to-date medical records, and you are eligible for a school-sponsored physical exam, our school doctor will be completing exams on April 9, 2024, and if needed on April 10, 2024. The exam will occur during the school day. The parent/guardian does not need to be present; however, page one of the Pennsylvania’s Department of Health Physical Exam form must be completed for the doctor to complete the exam. If you would like to be present, the school nurse will notify you of the date and approximate time of the exam. If you have any questions, please call your school nurse.
🤒Illness Reminder🤧
If your child is not feeling well, please consider keeping them at home. We have been seeing an increase in the number of students who arrive at school, and then immediately go to the health room with complaints about not feeling well. Please contact your school nurse if you have any questions.
💧Water Bottle Reminder💧
Reminder, please send your child to school with a refillable water bottle each day! If your child does not like the taste of the school water, please provide a spare water bottle for re-filling. Water refilling stations are also available at school.
✋✋Chapstick and Hand Lotion👄
Please encourage your children to apply ChapStick and lotion at home to prevent dry, cracked, and irritated skin. They may bring their own Chapstick and hand lotion to school.
🤧Seasonal Allergies🤧
If your child requires an allergy-related medicine to be administered during the school day, please complete the district’s medication administration form. This includes all prescribed and over-the-counter medications (i.e., eye drops, nasal sprays, oral medications, etc.).
🚩Field Trip Reminders🚩
· A signed parent approval/medical waiver is required for all students participating in a field trip. Your child will not be allowed to participate if a signed waiver is not obtained.
· If your child has a medical condition, and receives specific medical care during the school day, the parent/guardian will be offered the opportunity to attend their child’s trip. If the parent/guardian cannot attend the field trip, then arrangements will be made for a nurse to attend.
· If you are attending your child’s trip for medical reasons, and all necessary clearances have been approved, you will be able to chaperone other students in your child’s classroom. If you do not have the proper clearances, you can attend the trip with your child; however, will not be able to chaperone other students. If you have any questions, please contact your school nurse.
Clothing Donations
The BES Health Room need boys’ and girls’ pants (all sizes). Stretchy and sweatpants-type clothing seem to be the preference for many students. If you can donate, it would be greatly appreciated. Please call the school nurse if you have any questions.
Please include a spare change of clothing in your child’s backpack. We have been seeing many students with breakfast/lunch spills and muddy clothes from the playground. We try to accommodate all student requests; however, we have limited sizes/selection available.
