Attendance Matters! Rise up to Wise up!
Attending school regularly is essential to students gaining the academic, social and emotional skills they need to thrive. Chronic absence, no matter its cause, has real life consequences for students, families and society as a whole. Research shows starting as early as preschool and kindergarten, chronic absence—missing 10% of the academic year—can leave third graders unable to read proficiently, sixth graders struggling with coursework and high school students off track for graduation.*
Chronic absence, which involves monitoring when and which students miss too much school for any reason, is different from truancy (unexcused absences) or average daily attendance (how many students typically show up each day to school.) .
The good news is that chronic absence can be significantly reduced when Byron Elementary, our families and our community partners work together to monitor data, nurture a culture of engagement, promote regular attendance and routines, and address hurdles that keep children from getting to school every day. Please reach out if you or your student need information around attending school or if you are experiencing obstacles to getting to school.
Good evening BES families,
We have had a successful solid week of school here at the elementary! Ninety-one percent of our families attended the Open House last week. Thank you again to all who came out and supported your student. Our students' smiles when entering the new playground and loading the buses on safe walkways have been fun to watch. Many families have noticed our new School Resource Officer, Sarah Campbell. She is our district's SRO and will be on-site throughout the school year. Thanks to a grant-funded partnership between the school, the Village, and Durand Police Department, we now have this valuable resource in our district. Officer Campbell will not only enhance security but will also engage with our classrooms to support and educate alongside our staff. Please make sure to introduce yourself and say hi. You will not meet a more kind human being💜💛
Principal Newsletters are sent out every Friday around 6 pm via email. If you speak to another family and they do not receive this newsletter, please direct them to the office staff to ensure correctly entered information. Should you have any questions or concerns about the classroom, please reach out to your student's teacher. If you have other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 810.266.4671 or johnson@byron.k12.mi.us
Educationally Yours,
Mrs. Johnson
