Why Computer Science?
Computer Science Career Chats
Kaylie Sampson
Students in website design had the pleasure to hear Kaylie Sampson, a computer science student at Dartmouth College speak on May 10th. Kaylie gave insight on her Computer Science journey so far. She discussed how to obtain college internships, courses to take, and advise she would give to her high school self. Kaylie talked about her experience interning at Amazon Web Services last summer. She talked about the technical interview experience and her upcoming internship opportunity this summer at Duolingo. Kaylie shared the power of networking with our students and how this has helped her to connect to great opportunities during both her high school and college experiences.
Gabby Alvarez
On May 29th Gabby Alvarez a rising senior at Rochester Institute of Technology, majoring in Human-Centered Computing, came to speak to RS Website Design, Intro to CS, & Graphic Communications classes!
A Local Success Story:
During her high school years in NH, Gabby was recognized by the NH Affiliate of the National Council for Women in Information Technology with the prestigious Aspirations in Computing Award. Her passion for tech has only grown since then!
From Classroom to Cutting Edge:
Gabby shared her incredible journey, including her internship at Brainbox AI and her current role as a 2D Illustrator for a soon-to-be-launched mobile game. She also highlighted the impact of programs like Running Start Website Design and AP Computer Science Principles, which opened doors to the exciting world of computing and prepared her for college success.
Inspiring the Next Generation:
Gabby's dedication extends beyond her studies. She discussed how her senior project, leading a Girls Who Code club, empowers others to explore the possibilities of tech.

Intro to Computer Science
Students in this class have moved from blocked based JavaScript up to creating animations in Python programming. They are working with logical conditional statements where the computer has certain things animate or appear given a mouse more or mouse press action.
This student project took about 3 class periods to create and is just over 60 lines of code. Students refine their knowledge of the x, y coordinate grid to place various objects on the screen to make their creative ideas come to life.
