Words of advice for future IB students: Make time for friends and your real life. My best memories from IB and High School as a whole have been, of course, made outside of school. Remember that life is way more important than school, and that the best thing you can do is make memories and truly enjoy this short life that you have. As Ferris Bueller once said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” In the race to get ahead of your peers, it’s easy to become caught up in a program that lasts two years, and you can miss opportunities to make memories that will last a lifetime. Make sure to keep IB in perspective: it feels important now (and it is, absolutely), but your life and memories made during these formative years are far more important.

Words of advice for future IB students: Be sure to understand your “why” factor throughout the process. This doesn’t just mean that you understand you’re gonna get a lot of money by getting the IB diploma, but rather that you understand a deeper “why” within you. This can be religion, discipline, spirituality, an ego, or whatever works for you. The way to succeed here is to be timely, organized, and work with DEPTH. You won’t achieve depth if you only do this for a number or letter on a screen.
Liliana Wilson

Planning to Study: Engineering project management
Words of advice for future IB students: It’s okay to struggle, this is a hard academic process that will push you. Remember to take time for yourself and believe you can do it!
The Man, The Myth, The Legend - Mark Sherman
What are you going to miss about Dakota?
I have spent close to 30 years at Dakota Ridge High School. Let that sink in, more than half of my life has been spent in this building, in addition to opening it up in 1996, so it is difficult to pinpoint what I will miss. There are so many memories, moments, and people, all have given shape to my experiences and identity. There is a spirit to any school. The spirit of Dakota Ridge has had many cycles as we have evolved from the very beginning to today. The spirit of this school has been there for me, year after year. These hallowed halls have carried and will continue to carry the dreams and aspirations of all who walk through them: students, teachers, administrators, counselors, custodians. All of us. We are here for a unifying purpose: to try and help people of all walks of life evolve into better versions of themselves. What am I going to miss? I would say seeing those willing people – old and young – evolve and become a better version of themselves.
What are your plans for retirement - and what are you most looking forward to?
There is a fun irony about me: I am an introvert; however, I understand the need for human contact, so I have some extrovert tendencies. This duality usually finds a balance, though. The need for human contact is something so necessary that we sometimes lose sight of it. As we take more steps to disappear in our own mini, digitized worlds, we can neglect the need for the other in our lives. So, that said, I am looking forward to spending less time in front of a screen and developing different connections with the people around me. I am also looking forward to having the time to cultivate more of my creative sides. As to plans, aside from dealing with the list that has grown well beyond the length of my arm, you might find me tending a bar, perhaps stocking a shelf, maybe recommending a book. Whatever it is, if you see me, feel free to say hello and have a chat.
What song is playing as you ride off into the sunset?
Easy: "Present Tense" by Pearl Jam. Check it out. Seriously, put this down, either click the link or go to your streaming service, put on the song, shut out the rest of the world, and just be present in that moment. Nothing else. Be sure to listen to the whole thing, the rise of the music and what it reflects about how we live. Then take a moment and forgive your past self, so you can be your present self. You will feel better for it. To commemorate the present tense, as golden hour hits with the setting sun and the light is just right, take a selfie. Better yet, have someone take a picture of you (or take a picture with someone), as the present is best when shared.
Summer Homework!
Yes, it's a real thing.
Many honors, IB, and AP classes at Dakota Ridge have summer homework assignments. Be sure to check here to see if you have assignments this summer. Unfortunately, claiming you didn't know about summer homework will not get you out of assignments.
