The Barnard Broadcaster
Weekly Updates
Dear Barnard Families,
It was a short week, but a busy one for sure. Next week we have two exciting events going on at school, our 4th Grade Smencil Sale and Big Top Fair. Be sure to send your child in with money for both so they can be a part of the fun. Smencils are $1.50 and Big Top Fair raffle tickets are $1. Raffle tickets can be bought each day at lunch for an opportunity for students to drop their ticket into the prize bucket of choice. Raffle winners will be drawn at the end of Big Top Fair on Saturday.
Parent Teacher Conferences will be coming up soon on March 14th. Spring conferences are by invitation from your child's teacher. Be on the lookout for an invitation from your child's teacher this week. Please note that spring conferences are held virtually.
Friendly Reminder for Drop Off- Families we have seen a large increase in numbers of late drop offs in the morning. Please remember that our first bell rings at 9:04 am and our tardy bell rings at 9:09. All students are expected to be inside by 9:09, or you will need to park your car and walk them in to sign them in as late. We work hard to make the most of every minute of our learning day and with an increase of students trickling in later and later, it makes it difficult for teachers to start off their day as a community in their classroom. Thank you for your help and partnership in getting your child to school on time.

Building Your Child’s Social Skills Can Give Learning a Big Boost
Students learn much more in school than academics. In every class, kids practice an important skill—getting along with others. Research shows that problems with social skills can interfere with learning and make it difficult for kids to succeed in school and in life. To reinforce social skills:
- Be a role model. Children notice how family members interact with others. Do you introduce yourself to new people? Stay connected with friends? Support people you care about? Let your child see you being a good friend.
- Read stories. There are many books about friendship. After reading, talk about the story.
- Role-play. Kids need help practicing manners. With your child, pretend you’re meeting new people. “Hi, I’m Charlie. Nice to meet you!” Also focus on sharing and kindness.
- Socialize. Give your child plenty of opportunities to spend time and interact with other kids. Head to a local playground. Participate in children’s events at your local library. Sign up for a free class for kids at a community center.
- Relax. Children don’t need lots of friends. Just one good buddy is fine, as long as your child cooperates well with others. If you have any concerns, talk with the teacher and work together on solutions.

If you have any other clothing donations, different than the sign up, you can place them in the bin in our parking lot. The bin donations support The Red Cross, veterans and a portion of the proceeds come back to Barnard. Thank you! - Community Outreach Committee
