Dual Credit Important Information
Students who are interested in taking Dual Credit courses next year are invited to attend an interest meeting on November 6th for Current 11th graders and November 7th for Current 10th graders. They have the opportunity to sign up for this interest meeting by scanning a QR Code on the flyers throughout the building or by speaking with their counselor. Counselors will discuss the procedures for applying to Lone Star College and enrolling in Dual Credit courses. The Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA2) is a college readiness entrance exam that students must pass to qualify for Dual Credit. TWHS will administer this assessment on November 20th and 21st during the school day. Students can also qualify for dual credit courses with an SAT or ACT score instead of taking the TSIA2. The dates to register for the SAT or ACT are listed below. Those test administrations are on Saturdays at TWHS. The deadline to qualify for dual credit courses and turn in all paperwork and test scores will be Friday, April 11, 2025. It is recommended that a student interested in taking Dual Credit courses for the 2025-2026 school year take an SAT in December or March or the December or February ACT assessments. The scores from these assessments will be received prior to our April 11, 2025 Course Selection and Dual Credit deadline.

CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS NEWS
JROTC: These last two weeks have been very successful for our Corps! On Saturday, October 19th we competed in the Iron Eagle Meet at Oak Ridge High School in a variety of events. Here’s how we did:
- Marksmanship—1st Place, with individual words for Miranda Friebel (Prone 3rd, Kneeling 3rd) and Ainsley Frye (Kneeling 2nd)
- Academics—2nd Place
- Physical Training—1st Place
- 30 Basic Drill Command Sequence—2nd Place
- Drones—3rd Place
- Orienteering—1st Place
We placed high enough, in enough events, to earn First Place Overall for the meet!
On Saturday, October 26th our Orienteering Team competed in the Houston Orienteering Club’s Tom Bass Memorial Park Score-O. Cadets placing in their age/gender categories were freshman Joyce Ma (1st), sophomore Brayden Wilson (1st), junior Joshua Juno (1st), and Team Commander senior Aubrey Harris (2nd). Congratulations!
We completed our annual Headquarters Inspection Monday, October 28th. Our cadets worked incredibly hard over the past two months to prepare and it showed, as we got a 100/100, Exceeds Standards rating—the highest possible score! Well done by all our cadets!

Organized by College Park Marine JROTC this year, the event begins at 10 a.m. at Woodforest Stadium and will follow a traditional military parade format. This is a great way for cadets to honor those who have served alongside the other JROTC units within Conroe ISD. ALL Woodlands JROTC cadets will attend in uniform and participate. It is a Red Day and they will be excused from class that morning. Everyone is welcome to attend, and veterans attending will receive a special CISD challenge coin as a “thank you” for their service.

CLINIC NOTES
We are beginning a new series where we will discuss a different medical condition relevant to our students in some issues of the Highlander Happenings. We hope you find this information helpful, but please keep in mind that we cannot give medical advice. The best source of information is always your or your child’s physician. If your child has a chronic condition that needs to be managed at school, please reach out to his or her school nurse to discuss the protocol. We are available in the clinic from 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on school days.
Let’s Talk About Headaches
This is the most common complaint that we see in the clinic (241 visits for this as of October 28th), and the prevalence of headaches generally seems to increase with age. They can be caused by not enough water, poor sleep quality/not enough sleep, poor posture, skipping meals, eye strain due to uncorrected vision, stressors such as learning difficulties and/or bullying, or hormone shifts during puberty.
Primary headaches include migraines and tension headaches, which are caused by a diagnosable headache condition; and secondary headaches, which are caused by acute illness with fever, recurrent rhinosinusitis or other underlying conditions. These include sinus headaches, dehydration headaches, caffeine withdrawal, and medication overuse headaches (taking headache medication more than three times per week can cause these).
Treatment of headaches depends on the type of headache a person has. Over-the-counter medication can be helpful for occasional tension headaches and there are prescription medications to help manage migraines, but with secondary headaches, the underlying cause needs to be treated, such as increasing fluids, getting more restful sleep, decreasing caffeine use, and reducing stress. Other alternatives to medication include the use of hot or cold packs, doing stretching exercises, massaging the area, or resting in a dark, quiet room.
When should you see a doctor? You should schedule an appointment for daily or recurring headaches, headaches that appear to worsen, needing to take pain medication daily or almost daily, headaches that begin after a blow to the head, or headaches that are accompanied by stiff neck, neck pain, fever, and/or changes in vision.
For more information about headaches, please feel free to visit the National Headache Foundation website.

THE WOODLANDS HIGH SCHOOL ART TRUST
WE ARE CELEBRATING OUR 14th YEAR!!!
Have you ever noticed the 66 works of art by established Texas artists that are permanently displayed in the hallways at school? This is The Woodlands High School Art Collection and the works have been selected and purchased by our students. Each year we add new works to the collection and our next selection process has begun. Our student committee has narrowed down the works submitted by Texas artists to 12 that will be voted on by the entire student body in mid-November. Posters of the artworks will be on display by late October, video presentations will be on Highlander TV and the original pieces will be displayed in the cafeteria just prior to voting. The students will purchase as many as possible of the pieces that receive the most votes.
Thank you to all the artists that submitted their work for consideration. This year's nominated artists are:
Cassandra Bohne-Linnard (Cypress), Jonas Criscoe (Houston), Daryl Gannon (Conroe)
Patti Gary (Montgomery), Ksenia Kozhenkova (Houston), Tom Larock (The Woodlands)
Caroline Marcos (Tomball), Elena Martino (Willis), Drew McDonald (Austin)
Lynet McDonald (The Woodlands), Asiya Nouretdinova (Pearland), and Jason Turner (Spring).
Visit our website to see the winning entries: www.twhsat.org
Everyone (students, faculty, parents, guests) are invited to view and discuss the works of the 12 artists on Friday, November 1 from 1:30-3:00 p.m. in the front foyer of the main campus. (Artworks will also be displayed again from November 12-14 for all students to view.) If you would like more information on parking for the reception, please contact us at twhsat@gmail.com – no RSVP is necessary.
Although the artworks are purchased through funds set aside by Student Council from the Homecoming Dance, the framing, lighting and conservation of these pieces need funding. Consider helping with that funding and show your support for The Woodlands High School Art Trust by joining our "One Hundred Friends of Art." Our goal is to have 100 arts supporters make an annual donation to support our cause. Donations are tax deductible and start as low as $10!! Visit our website to make a contribution: www.twhsat.org.
The Woodlands High School Art Trust (TWHSAT) a 501(c)3 organization, was established in 2011 to help maintain, conserve and display the student-selected, student-purchased collection of established artists at The Woodlands High School. The vision for the TWHS Art Trust is to see the art collection grow each year and to have it extend through the hallways of the high school. Students use funds from their Homecoming Dance to purchase the art works. TWHSAT fundraises for the preservation and permanent display of the art works.
Other than the public sculptures around The Woodlands, this is the ONLY permanent collection of art available to the public. It is seen by THOUSANDS of people every day. Please consider supporting this unique collection that sets us apart from other public high schools and strengthens our goal of being one of the best high schools in the state and country.
For more information on The Woodlands High School Art Trust please visit our website www.twhsat.org or contact Susan Cosculluela at twhsat@gmail.com.
