From Mrs. Barry
As we prepare for next year, I wanted to give you an update on our staffing projections for 2024-2025. We will have the following classes in each grade level:
- PreKinder - 1
- Kinder - 5
- First Grade - 5
- Second Grade - 4
- Third Grade - 5
- Fourth Grade - 5
- Fifth Grade - 5
You will notice that this means additional classes in Kinder, First, and Fifth, and reduced classes in Second and Third. We are excited to announce that Jacque Pollpeter, our current primary Literacy Instructional Specialist, will be joining our Kinder team, and Ms. Tobin, current 3rd grade ELA teacher, will be moving down to First. We will begin interviewing for other open positions very soon!
Our Special Education Resource team will be reduced from 6 teachers to 5. Our AIM and Medically Fragile units will remain the same, as will our Resource paraprofessionals. Ms. Sattler will be moving from Resource into AIM.
In specials, we will have one Art teacher, one Music teacher, two Health Fitness teachers, and one health fitness assistants. Ms. Waggenspack, Ms. Holder, and Coach Harvey all plan to return.
Unfortunately, as you have heard, per district budget cuts, we will be losing our counselors, Ms. Luberger and Ms. Waldrop, and our ESL support personnel, Ms. Holub and Dr. T. Librarians (Ms. McCracken) have also been cut. The district will have 6 counselors that support 8 schools, including MWE - as I know more about what this will look like, I will share. We will have a media assistant in the library. This is a paraprofessional position that will allow students to continue to check out books, etc. In addition, PTA will be voting on a budget for the upcoming year that includes funding for two additional positions - Community in Schools (CIS) (Mr. Wolf) and a campus interventionist (Ms. McCracken). The proposed budget also included funding for our two part-time tutors, Ms. Koster and Ms. Burdick.
If you have any questions about our staffing situation for the upcoming year, please do not hesitate to reach out. And if you know any great teacher or paraprofessional candidates, please send them my way!
We are better together.
Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024
SOLAR ECLIPSE OVERVIEW
Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The solar eclipse will begin in Houston around 12:20 pm., with the deepest point of the eclipse with the Sun most hidden, around 1:40 pm. This is a unique experience/learning opportunity for our students. Following the 2024 eclipse, the next total solar eclipse seen from the United States will be on Aug. 23, 2044.
The district has planned some meaningful experiences for students to engage in during this valuable learning opportunity. Parents can opt out of this activity if they do not want their student to participate. Alternate indoor opportunities will be available. All students who participate will be required to wear ISO certified eyewear. However, we will have glasses for students to use. We ask that all parents review eye safety when looking at the Sun with their children prior to April 8th, 2024. Links to a safety video and additional information can be found on the SBISD Solar Eclipse Document.
SOLAR ECLIPSE SAFETY
Students wearing approved eclipse glasses can safely observe the eclipse as it happens, as long as they are wearing the glasses at all times. Sunglasses will not work.
If a student’s eyewear is not properly certified or is scratched or wrinkled, the student could experience permanent retinal damage from looking directly at the Sun.
The school will do its best to supervise students, however, please review eye safety when viewing the Sun with your child prior to April 8th, 2024. Eclipse glasses should be kept on at all times.
Date of Event: Monday, April 8, 2024
Opt Out Permission Slip
Please sign the Opt Out Permission Slip that was sent home with your student if you would NOT like your child to view the eclipse.
Blood Drive - April 16th
Blood Drive- Be a Hero. Donate Blood!
MWE is proud to host a blood drive to support the vast needs of our community. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 16 from 1:30 to 5:00 on a Donor Coach in front of the school. One donation can save 3 lives by providing plasma, platelets and red blood cells. Donate blood with a friend, colleague, or a loved one and spend an hour of quality time saving lives! Please sign up to make an appointment.
Some Facts:
- In order to meet the needs of the community, the blood center needs about 1.000 donations each day
- Every 2 seconds someone needs a blood transfusion
- Blood donations can help trauma victims, surgery patients, premature babies, individuals with anemia, cancer patients and many more
- 1 in every 7 people will need blood at some point in their lifetime, but only 1 in 20 will donate
