FOOD DRIVE
Earl Elementary School demonstrated the universal theme, “small groups can accomplish great things,” this week with their annual food drive. The students donated over 1200 food items in only four days! The activity was tied to Unity Day on October 16th. Unity Day is a national school event that celebrates the acceptance of all people. The food drive also connects to our trimester themes Be Kind, Be Helpful, & Be Respectful. The food items will be donated to Preston’s Pantry at the Boyertown Multiservice and used to help people in our local community. When we work together, we are #EarlStong!

CHRISTMAS GIVING PROGRAM
ART TO REMEMBER
Dear Parents & Guardians,
We have been working really hard on special art projects at school, and we can’t wait to show them to you!
Our school has teamed up with Art to Remember, and they can transfer our artwork onto keepsake products like mugs, keychains, and necklaces. First, we’ll bring home an order form (Oct 24th) with our artwork printed on the cover, and then you can order from over 50 products! Orders will be due by November 8th. The keepsakes make great gifts for family and friends. Plus, every purchase helps raise money for our school!
Love,
The Kiddos at EES
October News from the Nurse
We are happy to welcome fall & the return of field trips to BASD elementary schools! This year, we will be spacing our field trips throughout the school year! If your child has a medical need, please keep the following points in mind:
● Definition of a Student with Medical Needs: A student with a medically diagnosed condition and medication in the health room.
○ The parent/guardian has the right to attend the field trip with their child, or they can designate to have someone go in their place. Parents may not designate a teacher or principal to go with their child.
○ If a parent cannot attend and does not have anyone to go in their place, we can do one of two things: (1) with parent permission and doctor’s note we can skip or delay the medication (emergency medication cannot fall under this category); or, (2) we will send a nurse on the trip.
○ The nurse attending a trip for a student with medical needs is there for the student(s) with medical needs who would not otherwise be able to attend.
● Are Clearances Needed or Not: If a parent/guardian is attending a field trip to support their child with a medical need, they do not need clearances. They are there with their child only and should be in the same group as the teacher.
○ The parent/guardian without clearances may not be a chaperone or be without a teacher at any time with any child that is not their own.
○ That parent/guardian will have to provide their driver’s license to the office either prior to or the morning of the trip.
● Other Important Reminders: Chaperones are not able to administer medicine to anyone that is not their child. The nurse on the field trip is only for those children that would not have access to their education if they didn’t have their medication available.
Our goal is to provide a safe and fun field trip experience for all students! We thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
Medication at School
Students are not allowed to bring medication to school or keep medications in the backpacks. We also do not allow cough drops in school on the elementary level due to a choking hazard. If your child needs medication at school, please have their health care provider complete a medication administration form. Students can self-carry an albuterol inhaler, but it must be approved by the health care provider and parent and documented on the health form.
Illnesses: When to keep your child at home
Occasionally, it may be necessary for your child to remain home from school due to illness. The following guidelines should be followed when determining if you should keep your child at home.
- Your child should be kept at home following a nighttime bout of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or fever. Keep at home and watch for further symptoms. Students should be free of vomiting for 24 hours before returning to school.
- Your child should remain home if he/she has a temperature above 100 degrees. His/her temperature should remain normal for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication, which includes but not limited to: Acetaminophen/Tylenol, Ibuprofen/Motrin or Aleve, prior to returning to school.
- For any illness or injury that occurs prior to the start of school, after school, or at home, the parent/guardian should contact their health care provider for further directives regarding treatment and care.
Extra Clothing
Kids have accidents sometimes and they may need a change of clothing. Although there is some extra clothing in school, our supply of shorts, pants, and underwear go very fast. If we had to give your child a change of clothing, please bring them back as soon as you can. It is highly encouraged that parents have an extra change of clothing in a child’s backpack that includes a weather-appropriate shirt, pants/shorts, underwear, and socks.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your school nurses!

FLEXIBLE INSTRUCTION DAYS
BASD has the ability to utilize 5 flexible instruction days each year in the event that inclement weather or another emergency should create a need to cancel school at some point during the school year. Students will be provided with directions early next week on how to access their assignments should an FID day need to be used during the school year. Please note that there are no snow days built into the district calendar this year.
PARENT DROP OFF AND PICK UP PROCEDURES
As a reminder, car riders are dropped off and picked up at the back of the building. During these times, adults should not be getting out of their cars. There are staff members available if your child needs assistance getting in and/or out of the car. We appreciate your help in keeping Earl students safe.
Free/Reduced Meal Program Grace Period Set to Expire
Was your child eligible for free or reduced-price meals during the 2023-2024 school year? The Federal Government provides a 30-day grace period at the beginning of every school year for participating families to submit their required annual renewal application. The grace period ends on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. Families that have not completed their application for 2024-2025 will be charged for lunches beginning on Wednesday, October 9th. If you’re still in need of this program and have not submitted your annual application, please visit www.schoolcafe.com as soon as possible.
Full details regarding the program, including Federal Income Guidelines and the 2024-2025 Homebound Letter, are included in the Food Services Information Packet for 2024-2025. https://secure.smore.com/n/ztpme
LUNCH SNACKS GRADES 3-5
We will be offering doubles and snacks to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students after Labor Day. A double lunch costs $2.75 and that includes only the entrée. Students must have money in their account in order to purchase a double, even if they are free or reduced. The snacks listed below may not be available every day.
Snack prices are as follows
Cookie $ 1.00
Popcorn/chips $.85
Ice cream $1.00
Sm. Water $ .75
Capri sun $.85
Please note, that you can send a note/email to the cafeteria if you decide your child is not allowed to buy snacks. A note can be added to their account to prevent them from purchasing. You can also send a note if you decide they can only have 1 a week etc. But you must state what day they are allowed. For example, “Johnny can only purchase a snack on Friday” or “Johnny can purchase a snack on Tuesday and Thursday, etc. We can not answer a student if they ask whether or not they got a snack this week 😊
If you have any questions, please email or call me.
Thank You,
Marianne Merritt
