Message from Ms. Lahey
Greetings Hembree Families,
I hope this letter finds you well. This week we celebrated School Nutrition Week. We had special visitors from the Roswell PD in the cafeteria visiting our students. Our students were so excited!
October is conference month. Please make every effort to meet with your child's teacher to discuss progress. Thank you parents for partnering with us to ensure your child is making progress in his/her learning journey.
Our Hembree Hawks are so excited for our upcoming Trunk or Treat event on Friday October 18th. I look forward to seeing you there. Please see below for details.
After school clubs will begin the week of October 28th. Signups will be on a first come first serve basis and will begin after the Fall Break. I am so grateful to have a staff willing to volunteer their extra time to support our children and our community.
As we approach our Fall Break I hope that you get to relax and spend time with your children. The days are long, but the years are short. I often wish I could rewind the clock to when my own children were in elementary school so I could savor the moments. I hope you all cherish these long weekends with your children because they grow up so fast. Please be safe!
I hope you all have a great Fall Break!
Nancy Lahey
Principal

Book Character Day
On Thursday, October 31, 2024, we will be hosting a Story Book Character Day! On this day the staff and students may dress up as their favorite storybook character. We are asking that the character comes from a book that you have read and loved (not just from a movie or cartoon.)
Parents, please work with your child to plan a fun and simple homemade costume. We are asking that you work together to be creative with items around the house versus spending money on a store-bought costume. Your child may bring a copy of the book to class that day so that we can take part in several character study activities!
To help ensure students’ feelings of safety and security, violent or frightening costumes are not acceptable. No props, dangerous-looking items, or costume masks covering the face. Please reach out to your teacher with any questions.
Digital Citizenship
Hi Parents,
In the Media Center, students are learning about what it means to be a Good Digital Citizen. Good Digital Citizens are those who are safe and responsible when going online. The lessons used to teach Digital Citizenship across Fulton County come from Common Sense Media and are taught in an age-appropriate manner. We focus on finding balance, being upstanding citizens while online, being kind and responsible, being careful of the tracks we leave online, and using our head to ask questions and not believe everything we see. Common Sense Media has excellent resources for parents and educators.
Below, you’ll find links to Common Sense Media where you can find articles and other tools and resources you will hopefully find helpful. You will also find a link to the Hembree Springs Media Center page where you will find more information about Digital Citizenship and what we do in the Media Center. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Soberanis at soberanis@fultonschools.org. We will continue our lessons on Digital Citizenship throughout the school year.

Feed the Candy Monster!
It looks like we’ve got a problem on our hands at Hembree Springs. Fillmore the Candy Monster is eating allllll the wrong things! He needs these impossibly sweet confections to behave. Drop off individually wrapped candies and Feed Fillmore from now until Oct. 18. The PTA will use the candy to supplement teachers' trunks for Trunk or Treat. He’s waiting for you in the front lobby!
Beanstack! Help us reach our school wide reading goal of 50,000 minutes!
Have you heard your child mention anything about an app called Beanstack? It was introduced in the Media Center. Beanstack is a digital reading log that students can use to log the number of minutes they are reading. They can earn badges and rewards along the way. This year, we have a schoolwide reading goal of 50,000 minutes! We can’t reach our goal without the help of your child! If your child is reading at school, home, daycare, etc. they can log their minutes and help us get closer to our goal. The following is a video explaining how to use Beanstack from home. You can always find your child's lunch number/student number in infinite campus or email Mrs. Soberanis: soberanis@fultonschools.org. Happy Reading!

Bring a Book, Take a Book
The PTA is adding something NEW to this year's Trunk or Treat next Friday, and it needs your participation! Next month, the school will host literacy events such as Literacy Night Nov. 7, the Scholastic Book fair and our Read-a-thon. To get things started, our PTA trunk will transform into a Bookmobile.
For the past several weeks, our PTA has been collecting used books. In addition to candy and treats, we want your kids to pick a book to bring home too! If you have books your child is no longer reading, we encourage you to Bring a Book, Take a Book. Take a look at your shelves at home between now and next Friday and see if there are a couple you can bring to the event to donate. We especially need middle grades books (3rd-5th grade). Bilingual books are great too!
Yearbooks Are On Sale!
All Stars Wanted
Each week the PE department will choose 4 All Star Athletes (2 students & 2 staff members). If your student enjoys hiking, swimming, baseball, softball, football, biking, etc. Please email a picture to marzetti@fultonschools.org.
Thanks,
Ms. Marzetti
