ORCA SOUNDINGS
May2024 | Olympic View Elementary School
From the Desk of our Principal
Dear Orca Families,
"A good teacher is like a candle—it consumes itself to light the way for others." –Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
I can distinctly remember every teacher I had in elementary school. I remember how I felt being in their classroom and I remember the love they had for me and for the students in their class. Having students grow academically is important, but making sure students know they belong at school is the most important thing. I am thankful to work alongside teachers who provide a place where all students belong and who work hard to show them they are important, just like the teachers that I was lucky enough to have when I was growing up.
May 6th through 10th marks Teacher Appreciation Week. It's a fantastic opportunity for us to express our gratitude to the remarkable educators who dedicate themselves to our children's growth and development. Please help me show them the appreciation they deserve by saying “thank you!”
There are many exciting school events on the horizon! To stay updated, be sure to check the calendar in the upcoming newsletter and visit our school's Facebook page. From sports events to cultural celebrations, there's something for everyone to enjoy and be a part of.
Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in our school community. Together, we can make this spring season a memorable and enriching time for our children.
Please reach out to me with any questions or if I can help in any way.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Lucero

NEWS FROM OUR NURSE
Healthy Snacks: When, What and Where
Source: https://www.seattlechildrens.org/health-safety/good-growing/
Families thrive on healthy habits and routines. Having a regular snack schedule for your child is a smart practice. For most kids, 3 meals plus 2 snacks a day is a healthy way to go. This fuels them with the nutrients they need to think, learn, grow, and play. Offering regular meals plus small healthy snacks also helps a child discover how much food their body really needs.
Create well-balanced snacks by choosing items from 2 or 3 different food groups, including fruits and vegetables. For example, berries, yogurt, and nuts provide fruit, dairy, and protein. Carrots, string cheese, and whole-wheat crackers provide vegetables, dairy, and whole grains. Offer a wide variety of foods so your child learns to try new tastes. And invite them to choose and help prepare the snack with you.
Whenever possible, avoid snacks that are seen as "treats" such as foods that are too sugary or salty or that offer empty calories. A snack should serve as a mini meal to satisfy hunger, but it should not cause a child to fill up so much that they don’t want to eat at mealtime.
If possible, give snacks at a regular eating spot like the kitchen table or a counter. When the weather allows, it’s fun to eat outside on a patio table or picnic table. Or enjoy a "tailgate" snack in the car after playing at your favorite park. Wherever the location, make the food (along with some friendly conversation!) the focus.
Avoid snacking while watching screens, as this can lead to automatic or unconscious eating. Being fully aware of what they’re eating allows a child to feel their body’s cues that tell them whether they’re hungry or full. This ability to tune in to their body is a crucial skill that will serve them their entire lives.

#OneOakHarbor - Building a Vision for Student Success
As you know, we have been engaging in a journey to student success through a community-wide Strategic Planning process that will guide our work for the next five years. We want to thank the thousands of students, staff, families and community members who have been a part of this journey so far!
Now is the time to vote on the new Oak Harbor Public Schools "Promise Statement" or tagline to go with our Strategic Plan and vision for the future of our schools. A promise statement is a simple, short, and inspiring statement that captures the commitment of the Oak Harbor Public Schools community. The draft statements in the survey were developed by our Core Community Strategic Planning Committee, which includes students, staff, families and community members.
Please place your vote here on your top choice by May 10, 2024
Thank you for being a part of this journey to develop a strategic plan to ensure all students in the Oak Harbor Public Schools are successful as #OneOakHarbor.

Counselor's Corner
Our character trait of the month is Creativity. Creativity is using your imagination to create something new or solve a problem. We love children's creativity! At OVE, we foster and encourage students' creativity through a variety of academic channels.
Here is a fun activity for you to do at home with your child: each person will have 1 minute to draw a quick picture on their partner’s back using their finger. This could be a boat, rainbow, horse – anything! Each partner will take turns drawing and guessing what they think their partner drew.
Warmly, Stacey Mahoney
