South Lawrence East Elementary
Back To School 2024-2025
Principal's Message
Thank you, families, for a great start to our school year. It's been great to be back with your kids.
We are off to a great start 😉.
We will send a newsletter home to you every 5-6 weeks. In this we will share news from the school and each grade level will also specific news from their teams.
In this first newsletter we wanted to share some general information 😉
Attendance
We are off to a great start with our attendance. Our attendance rate is almost 95%! The importance of kids being in school on time every day is perhaps the best support we can provide kids with. Let's keep up strong attendance. Just a reminder that students are considered "chronically absent" by the state of Massachusetts once they miss 10% of school of more.
When kids miss school, they are likely to fall behind. We are asking that you please keep vacations to the school vacation weeks. This year we have a 2-week Christmas vacation window. Please try to schedule longer vacations to these two weeks.
Arrival and Dismissal
Both arrival and dismissal have been going well so far! Thank you.
Arrival
The schoolyard gates are open form 7:30-7:55 each morning. Students my start entering the building at 7:40. Breakfast runs from 7:40-8:05. If kids want to eat breakfast in school, please do your best to get them here with enough time to eat.
Dismissal
Dismissal is at 2:50 and students are expected to be picked up between 2:50-3:00 (no later than 3:00).
If you need to change the dismissal plan on any day, please inform the teacher or office.
For example, kids that are usually on the bus will sometimes tell us they are being picked up that day but we don't get that message from a parent. We've instructed our teachers that any changes to dismissal have to be informed by a parent or guardian. If we aren't informed by a parent or guardian, the change will not be made.
Uniform and Non-Uniform Days
Uniform
Please do your best to send students in uniform each day. If you can keep sweaters and sweatshirts to navy blue, gray, or white, (and without designs) we appreciate it.
If you need support getting a uniform for your child, please call the school and ask to speak with Ashley Torres or Juleysis Marrero.
Non Uniform Days
Students are allowed to dress out of uniform on Fridays for $1. The money raised goes to pay for student recognition prizes, weekly Love Note raffle prizes, classroom materials, etc.
Food
As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, we would like to remind everyone of our school’s policy regarding food sharing. Due to the increasing number of students with food allergies, it is important that children do not share food in school.
If you would like to celebrate a birthday or special occasion, we kindly ask that you consider non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or small toys instead of edible treats. This helps us maintain a safe environment for all students.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in keeping our school safe for everyone.
Love Note Raffle, Big Prize, Classroom Recognition Awards
Love Note Raffle
Students can earn "Love Notes" for meeting our expectations of kindness, respect, responsibility, and hard work. Students can turn love notes in for classroom reward or enter them into our weekly Love Note Raffle where we draw 5 love notes from each grade each week for a prize.
Big Prize
At the end of each month, we raffle a "BIG PRIZE." Students can enter their "Love Notes" into this raffle as well.
Recognition Awards and Classroom of the Month
Every 5-6 weeks we hold Student Recognition Assemblies where 3 students from each class is recognized for the following:
Hard work
Kindness and Compassion
Responsibility
The teachers share the reasons why specific students are chosen for these awards and students are called to the stage to receive a certificate and special TSHIRT (that they can wear as uniform). You are welcome to attend these assemblies. Teachers will notify you if your child is receiving an award.
Classroom of the Month
Every day, classrooms earn points for the following:
Transitions
Meeting expectations during specials
Meeting expectations during Tech Time
We track points by homeroom and at the end of the 5–6-week period, then we recognize the class with the most points as the "Classroom of the Month."
The class earns a trophy to keep in their class and carry with them in the hallway
A special pencil
An extra recess
A certificate to bring home
