Celebrating Retirements
Mary Jean Butler
After 29 wonderful years of dedicated service, Mary Jean Butler is hanging up her teaching hat and embracing the sweet serenity of retirement! Mary Jean's journey has been filled with cherished memories, but none quite as dear as the magic of read-alouds. Watching her students dive headfirst into the world of literature, eagerly awaiting the next chapter's adventures, has been the heart and soul of her classroom.
Beyond the classroom, Mary Jean's heart beats for her beloved church and her expansive family. With retirement on the horizon, she plans to bask in the August sun by her pool, surrounded by loved ones, and delve into books simply for the joy of it. To all new teachers, Mary Jean shares sage advice: "Enjoy every moment and
find the positive in each day. We often forget to savor the little things." Among her many loves of teaching, field trips hold a special place in Mary Jean's heart, igniting curiosity and wonder in her students with each adventure.
Please join us in celebrating Mary Jean Butler's incredible career and wishing her a retirement filled with relaxation, family, and endless literary escapades.
Charlie Hargrave
Charlie Hargrave has dedicated 35.5 years to the field of education, with 31 years as a music teacher, 1.5 years as a substitute teacher, and 3 years at the SOLC. Throughout his career, he has cherished every moment. As a music teacher, he found immense joy in witnessing students grow and develop over the years. Inspired by his mother, who also taught for 31 years and always rooted for the underdog, Charlie has carried forward this supportive spirit in his own teaching.
Looking ahead, Charlie has exciting plans, including traveling to Alaska, DJing, and exploring other interests that have piqued his curiosity. He expresses his gratitude to Mrs. Justice and Mrs. Haskins for the opportunity to serve the community.
Dr. Vickey Leasure, Ph.D
Dr. Vickey Leasure, Ph.D., is a seasoned educator with over fifty years of professional experience, who is soon to be retiring from the Southern Ohio Learning Center, where she served students as a school counselor. Her diverse career includes roles as a classroom teacher, counselor, supervisor, and adjunct professor.
Over many summers, Dr. Leasure worked at an outdoor education camp in Massachusetts and directed a similar camp in her hometown. Career highlights include serving as a counselor in Taiwan for two years, receiving twenty educational grants, earning her Ph.D., and serving as a staff member under Ms. Beth Justice, the superintendent and a former student from Dr. Leasure's very first classroom.
Some fish like to swim upstream, so next year, Dr. Leasure will continue working part-time with at-risk students for an agency.
In the nineties, she took an educational break and became a flight attendant. There will likely be more trips both domestically and abroad with family and friends, with upcoming destinations including Yellowstone, Peru, and Greece. Dr. Leasure's educational and geographical journey continues!

Coming Up!
Kamp Dovetail
AMP (Kids And Motivated People) Dovetail is a volunteer run summer camp sponsored by Supplementary Assistance to The Handicapped ( S. A. T. H.) a non-profit organization. The camp is for children with disabilities in Highland and surrounding counties of Ohio.
The camp is held at the Rocky Fork Lake State Park in Highland County, Ohio. Each child who visits our camp is teamed with their very own camp volunteer. You will notice that we used the word volunteer instead of counselor. That is because everyone at our camp is exactly that. A volunteer! None of the individuals at our camp are paid for their time. Each and every person is there solely for the purpose of ensuring that the campers enjoy their week at camp. Our volunteer staff works diligently all year long to secure donations of cash and supplies from area merchants and individuals. This combination of an all volunteer staff and their year long fund-raising campaigns allows us to offer our camp at a fraction of the cost charged by other similar camps. Our camp has been operating in this fashion for over 30 years.
Each year the camp staff selects a theme that the camp will operate under for that year. The 2024 theme will be "KAMP Dovetail-In Motion". The week of KAMP Dovetail starts Monday, June 17, 2024.
