Shocker Standouts
Counselors' Corner
During middle school, some students seem to lose motivation in school. One way that we combat that is by helping them to develop a “growth mindset”. This is a belief that their abilities, intelligences and talents can be developed and improved. Students who believe this tend to challenge themselves more, they believe they can do hard things, and they become more resilient. Parents can encourage a “growth mindset” in their students by doing things such as praising effort, not outcome. 6th Grade Takes on a DBQ Project!
What is a DBQ Project?
DBQs, also known as Document-Based Questions, ask students to analyze an issue or a trend from history, using historical documents. Students compose an essay in response to a question. If you have (or have had) a high school student, you'll recognize DBQs as an integral part of the AP classes related to history.
We're proud of our students and the teachers who guide them. This project posed the question, "How great was Alexander the Great?" DBQs represent a genuine cognitive challenge that builds the skills students will need in high school and college. Way to go, sixth grade!
SCMS Jazz Ensemble at UNCC
Just How Good Are They?
Really good, actually! Our talented Jazz Ensemble and their remarkable Bandmaster, Mr. Ratliff, performed again this year at UNCC's 49er Jazz Festival. Adjudicated and limited to just 10 bands, middle school performances there are rare, with most participants coming from high schools. Our ensemble did Shocker Nation proud, earning the esteem of judges and directors alike. Well done!
