Dear TUFSD Parents and Staff,
I am pleased to share the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns’ Portrait of a Learner. The portrait was created by a diverse group of stakeholders during the 2022-2023 school year. This powerful and unifying vision articulates eight skills and dispositions we want all of our students to work on and develop by the time they leave our high schools. Beyond academic knowledge, we are committed to nurturing a well-rounded education that equips our students with the abilities and characteristics that will serve them not only in their personal lives but also as engaged citizens in an ever-changing world.
Essential Skills
Communication
Effective communication lies at the heart of our educational mission. We strive to empower our students with the skill to express themselves clearly, thoughtfully, and persuasively. Proficient in both written and spoken communication, our students are not only able to convey their thoughts but also actively engage with and understand the perspectives of others.
Executive Functioning
Executive functioning skills encompass a range of cognitive abilities that underpin success in various aspects of life. These include organization, time management, setting and achieving goals, and problem-solving. Our students graduate with the practical skills required to navigate life's challenges and opportunities with confidence and purpose.
Creativity
Creativity is the driving force behind innovation and progress. We encourage our students to embrace their creative instincts, fostering an environment where they can think imaginatively, generate innovative ideas, and approach issues from fresh and unique angles. Creativity cultivates open-mindedness and adaptability, essential traits in a rapidly evolving world.
Critical Thinking
In an era of information abundance, the ability to think critically is paramount. Our students graduate with the capacity to evaluate information, analyze complex situations, and make informed decisions. Critical thinking inspires intellectual curiosity and a lifelong commitment to learning.
Essential Dispositions
Curiosity
At the heart of our educational philosophy is the belief that curiosity is the foundation of learning. We nurture a sense of wonder and inquisitiveness, motivating our students to explore, question, and seek answers. Curiosity propels personal growth, a love of discovery, and the drive to make a difference
Perseverance
Life is full of challenges, and we strive to equip our students with the disposition of perseverance. They learn to face adversity with determination, continue to push forward, and never waver in their pursuit of goals. This enduring commitment to their aspirations sets the stage for personal achievement and resilience.
Socio-Cultural Competence
In an interconnected, diverse world, socio-cultural competence is of paramount importance. Our students graduate with the ability to engage respectfully and effectively with individuals from different backgrounds and perspectives. This disposition fosters empathy, inclusivity, and a deeper understanding of global issues.
Civic Mindedness
We aspire to cultivate in our students a strong sense of civic responsibility. They leave our school district with a profound commitment to making a positive impact on their communities and the world at large. Civic mindedness encourages active engagement in the betterment of society, and it is a cornerstone of responsible citizenship.
This Portrait of a Learner embodies our collective commitment to student success. You can read more on the overarching plan and process on our new Portrait of a Learner Website.
As we continue to plan for our students, it will guide us as we design our curriculum, create meaningful learning experiences, and support our students on their unique paths of growth and achievement.
Over the course of the rest of the year, we will continue to work to build a common understanding of the competencies. Over the course of the upcoming years, it will serve as a guide in our strategic planning and programming efforts. We are excited to begin this journey as a school community!
Sincerely,
Dr. Ray Sanchez
