Weekly Highlights
W.L. Northern alumnus sets Guinness World Record for cause close to his heart ⛳
Walled Lake Northern graduate Zach Brunet (’19) hit the greens at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Alma, Arkansas this past spring for a round of golf that would be unmatched by anyone before. Brunet, along with Derek Frail, Alex Graziani, Lex Mickle and Philip Robertson, set out to endure 24 hours on the course to raise money for the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation.
Phelan-McDermid Syndrome is a rare genetic condition that causes developmental delays, speech delays, behavioral problems, and a weakened or no ability to feel pain or sweat.
The cause is close to Brunet’s heart. His older sister, Ashlyn, who is currently a student in the District’s Adult Transitions Program, suffers from Phelan-McDermid Syndrome.
“I obviously love her very much, and to be able to do something like this for the foundation that supports her is really special to me,” said Brunet. “It was truly an awesome experience to not only do something for the foundation and raise a bunch of money for my sister, but also do the 24 hours.”
The goal was to raise $10,000. However, they well exceeded that mark totaling $12,145.68.
Brunet and his fivesome started their round at 8 a.m. on April 12. Over the next 24 hours, they’d set a new Guinness World Record playing 200 holes of golf while walking, shattering the previous record of 180 holes. They also covered over 65 miles and climbed more than 8,000 feet of elevation during that span, which is nearly two and a half marathons and almost a third of the way up Mount Everest.
Sarah G. Banks MS partners with Wixom PD to give back to families in need 🎁
Sarah G. Banks Middle School and the Wixom Police Department partnered for the fourth-straight year to help ‘Stuff the Squad Trailer’ for families who are victims of violent crimes.
Students were asked to bring new and unwrapped children’s clothing, toys or books to school. On Monday, December 2, Wixom Police officers pulled a trailer up to the school and together they stuffed it with gifts to help delivery plenty of holiday cheer.
Walled Lake Western’s Kory Cioroch named Regional Coach of the Year 🏅
Walled Lake Western’s Kory Cioroch was named the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Division 3, Region 4 Coach of the Year for the second-straight season.
Cioroch guided the Warriors to their third-straight Lakes Valley Conference Championship, second-straight District Championship, and first undefeated regular season since 2015. Walled Lake Western finished the season as regional finalists with an overall record of 11-1.
Along with Cioroch, eight Warriors received regional honors: Jacarri Anderson, Lucas Hoffmeyer, Max Kirk, David Krall, Shane Rachner, Troy Temple, Donovan Triplett, and Liam Vaughan.

District Facility Study Update - November 2024 📝
The recommendation from the Facilities Study Committee was to repurpose Geisler Middle School. The original plan involved a feeder pattern with no elementary to middle school to high school splits. The revised plan (below graphic) was developed based on feedback that we received from the community and a majority of the committee.
The advantages of the revised plan are:
- Students will be on the bus for a shorter period of time.
- It will reduce transportation costs.
It maintains the current middle school feeder pattern for Loon Lake Elementary.
It maintains current bussing runs for Loon Lake Elementary.
It maintains the current high school, elementary school feeder pattern.
It will be easier for families to attend events.
It reduces the number of elementary to middle school to high school splits.
It impacts the least number of students.
On December 5th, the Board will vote on the entire recommendation, which is the repurposing of Geisler Middle School and the feeder patterns listed below.
For additional background information on the Facility Utilization Study, see the page on the District website.
26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration - Jan. 20, 2025 🎤
Walled Lake Schools 26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration at Walled Lake Northern High School on Monday, January 20th beginning at 5:00 p.m.
This year’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration theme is Unity.
“Unity in diversity is unity between all individuals and groups, regardless of differences. It is unity without uniformity, and diversity without divisiveness. It is an understanding that the differences between people enrich our lives and makes our country the special, and unique place it is”.
Alec Bender Friend of Diversity Award
Walled Lake Schools has created an award to honor individuals who are true friends of diversity. We hope you will join us in an effort that will result in the selection of a Fiend of Diversity. This honor will be bestowed on the recipient(s) at the 26th annual district-wide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration on Monday, January 20th, 2025.
Our committee hopes that each school building will nominate at least one staff member, student, parent, or community member for the Alec Bender Friend of Diversity Award.
