Mrs. Gonczy’s music classes at Whitney Elementary have been learning about Africa and the different instruments played in this country throughout this year. Recently, she connected her third grade class with Mr. Roblee, a Walsh University professor and expert in African drumming. Click HERE for this week’s ‘60 Seconds’ episode, as we hear more about the different African instruments and customs that students were able to experience.

Our District has created the SCS Responsible Restart Comprehensive Guide - one document in one location outlining our District’s policies and procedures. This document should be used as a guide, allowing you to quickly find answers to your questions. The guide can also be found at www.strongnet.org/restart.

As we have seen throughout the pandemic, factors can change on a daily basis and this Guide will remain adjustable and flexible to respond to state and local health guidelines.

Our District is excited to announce a partnership agreement with the nationally recognized school enrichment provider, Right At School, to provide before- and after-school care for elementary students this fall. Right at School will be offering before- and after-school care every weekday (Monday-Friday) at each of the elementary school buildings in our District, beginning in August, 2021. Two Parent Forums, hosted by Right At School representatives, are scheduled on Wednesday, April 21st to provide additional information about the programs being offered for SCS families. Strongsville City Schools has been honored with the “Best Communities for Music Education” designation from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. This is the eighth straight year the District has earned this distinction. Strongsville is one of 686 school districts nationwide to be recognized by NAMM, and one of just 20 school districts in Northeast Ohio to receive this prestigious award in 2021.

Health Heroes, Inc. will be offering the TDaP and Meningitis vaccinations on Wednesday, May 5th at Strongsville High School and Strongsville Middle School. These vaccinations are REQUIRED for school attendance by the State of Ohio. Click HERE for additional information on this vaccination clinic. This year’s SHS Spring Musical is a live stream event that you will be able to watch in the comforts of your own home! The Little Mermaid Jr. will be available to stream at home via ShowTix4U. Streaming dates for the musical are Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24 at 7pm.

Please welcome (back) Mrs. Kaylee Harrell to Strongsville City Schools. Mrs. Harrell was approved at last night's Board of Education Meeting to be the new Principal at Chapman Elementary School.

Mrs. Harrell is currently the Principal at Melrose Elementary School in Wooster. She has been a part of the Wooster City School District since 2014 and has held positions as both a teacher and administrator. Mrs. Harrell has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, earning both degrees at Ashland University.

Mrs. Stephanie Stewart is in her first year working as a Bus Aide in the Transportation Department for our District. Mrs. Stewart recently moved to our District and has a son with special needs who is at Strongsville High School. She spent the past 14 years working with students with special needs in another District. This is her passion and provides the motivation for her on a daily basis. “I like to say that you can just take the ‘dis’ off of ‘disability’ for students. They have the ability. It just might not be the same as we envision.”

“The favorite part of my job is making a difference with students. I have started to learn sign language in the past few months so that I can connect with a student on one of my buses. Showing that we care brings a calmness to parents. It only takes small things each day - like creating fun games for the students to engage in on the bus ride to and from school - to let our parents and students know that they matter,” said Mrs. Stewart.

Strongsville City Schools & Locals 290 & 028 of the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE) have agreed on a 3-year contract extension. These local OAPSE units include our transportation, custodial/maintenance, food services, educational support, office support, and technology staff in the District. Congratulations to the Mustang Express (Strongsville High School’s Showchoir) for recent awards and recognition. The group competed at both the Marysville Invitational, which included showchoirs from Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, and New York, and the Medina Midwest Invitational. In Marysville, Mustang Express earned Best Set, Best Costumes, Best Combo, Best Choreography, Best Vocals, and were named Grand Champion in their division. Isaac Seimer was named Best Soloist and Caleb Kocsis was named Best Overall Male Dancer. In Medina, the group earned the “Gold Award” and Lindsay Cox was named Outstanding Performer.

Attention current fifth graders - don't miss your chance to zipline, swim, fish, and participate in lots of fun activities with your friends at the annual Sixth Grade Camp in the fall! The Sixth Grade Camp will be held at Skyview Ranch in Millersburg, Ohio from Friday, September 10 - Sunday September 12 (students attending the Sixth Grade Camp will be excused from school on Friday, September 10th). Safety Village is a Strongsville Police Event designed to provide most of the same information delivered in Safety Town to the children of Strongsville that did not have a chance to attend Safety Town last year pre-kindergarten due to the Pandemic. Computer Classes

Cuyahoga County Public Library offers computer classes for beginners to advanced. Classes are currently being held VIRTUALLY using the program Screenleap which requires a web browser and an internet connection. There is no additional software to download. Google Chrome is the recommended browser. A valid email address is required for registration. Registrants will receive an email with a link to join the class at least an hour before the start time. Take & Make At Home Crafts!

Stop into the Strongsville Branch to see what the current take it and make it craft of the month is for All Ages. Each month the Youth and Adult Departments are offering free craft kits to take home while supplies last.

Have you ever thought about recording your own music, making a video, digitizing memories and more? The Strongsville Library is home to both Audio and Video Recording studios that can help you do just that! You must go through an orientation in order to use the spaces. During the COVID-19 pandemic these orientations will be held VIRTUALLY ONLY. We will offer orientations on both rooms, however, only the Video Studio is open during this time. The Audio Studio orientation begins at 9:30a.m. and the Video Studio orientation follows immediately after. Patrons 11 & up can participate in the orientation and must turn in the User Agreement form at the branch in order for the orientation to count. Register online to receive the Zoom link.

Our Wednesday Evening Book Discussion has gone VIRTUAL and will be live on Zoom at 7p.m. on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. We welcome all adults interested in reading and discussing great books!
