Principal's Message
Dear BES families,
Please continue to review the parking lot safety expectations below. If you have any questions about the parking lot expectations, please call our office.
Our annual Monster Mash will be here before we know it! Please see the flyer below for an auction "wishlist" for Monster Mash.
Unsafe activity and behavior in our school parking lot is observed and reported regularly by families and staff members. We are a very large school which means a lot of cars and pedestrians moving on and off campus throughout the day. Please make note of the following important safety expectations that are witnessed far too often and be extra diligent when driving through the parking lot. Along with the following safety issues that are observed often, please spend some time reviewing all safety expectations regarding drop off and pick up in this newsletter.
- The left lane is a "passing lane" only. You may NOT drop your student off in this lane. It is extremely dangerous as they dart through cars to get on campus.
- Our parking lot has a 5 mph posted speed limit. This speed limit helps keep you and others safe so you can stop quickly should you need to.
- Our extended care program has students and families entering and exiting throughout the morning and afternoon. Please be extra aware as you are driving onto the campus in this are as it is often difficult to see pedestrians crossing to get to extended care. I am working with the district to put extra safety measures in place in this are.
- NEW - Please be sure you are using the two crosswalks that we have in front of the school. We purposefully put staff with stop signs there to support a safe school parking lot.
Warmly,
Allison Fortney
School marquee update
Last year, the school held a fundraiser through Step it Up to raise money for a new marquee. Our school marquee has been broken for a few years and the software was too out of date to have it repaired. A marquee serves as a wonderful tool to share information, celebrations, and important updates with our school and the greater community. I am happy to report that our new marquee has been ordered! We can't wait to see this project through within the next couple of months! Thank you to everyone who donated to this project!
BUSD Dress Code and Policies
As we begin the school year, please take a moment to read the following BUSD board policies and dress code information. You can refer to the Board Policy Manual HERE. Please note that students should be covering midriffs, wearing shorts, skirts, or dresses of an appropriate length, and undergarments need to be concealed which means that students should not be wearing tops with "spaghetti straps." Students can wear open toed shoes but they must have a strap around the back of the ankle for safety purposes. If any of the following expectations are violated, your student may be asked to call their parents for a change of clothes.
Regulation 5132: Dress and Grooming
In cooperation with teachers, students, and parents/guardians, the principal or designee may establish school rules governing student dress and grooming which are consistent with law, Board policy, and administrative regulations. These school dress codes shall be regularly reviewed.
The following guidelines shall apply to all regular school activities:
- Clothing, jewelry, and personal items shall be free of writing, pictures, or any other insignia which is vulgar, lewd, obscene, profane, or sexually suggestive or which promotes the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or other illegal activity.
- Appropriate shoes must be worn at all times.
- Hats, caps, and other head coverings shall not be worn indoors.
- Clothes shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments. See-through tops and bare abdomens are prohibited.
The dress code shall be modified as appropriate to accommodate a student's religious or cultural observance, health condition, or other circumstance deemed necessary by the principal or designee. In addition, the principal or designee may impose dress requirements to accommodate the needs of special school activities, physical education classes, athletic activities, and other extracurricular and co-curricular activities.

Breakfast at BES
We are proud to serve a free breakfast to all students at BES every day. Breakfast begins when the gate opens and the breakfast menu and options will be posted by the front gate. You will also find the link to the breakfast and lunch menus below. If a student is choosing to eat breakfast, they must go to the cafeteria and eat BEFORE they go play. If a student gets breakfast after the first bell rings and they are late to class, they will be marked tardy.
Child Nutrition Services Information
Please see the letter below from Kursten Orr, our Child Nutrition Services Director.

Drop off and pick up information for Bonsall Elementary School
*You may not park your car or get out of your car in the loading/unloading zone. This is not only a safety issue, but also causes the traffic to back up.
*You can exit the school on Old River Rd ONLY if you park or drop off your student at the Community Center. The only exit from the school parking lot is via Avenida de los PiƱos. While following the traffic pattern, there will be no "left" in order to access the exit through the Community Center onto Old River Rd.
*The bus lane is at the FRONT of the drop off line. No cars will be allowed to access the bus lane. Please be aware that this is extremely important as our buses are on times routes and it is imperative that the assigned bus zone is kept clear of cars at all times.
*The ramp from the adjoining neighborhood is available for use. You can park and walk your student up using the ramp. There will be a staff member on duty to provide support at the crosswalk on the campus.
*The lane closest to the curb is for loading/unloading only. Please make sure students exit on the RIGHT side of the car. The left lane is now a passing lane which makes is extremely dangerous for students to exit on the left side of the car. Students exiting cars in the passing lane was witnessed way too often last year. The last thing we want is for someone to get hurt. Cars are not watching for children darting in front of their cars due to being dropped off incorrectly.
*You can use the Community Center for drop off and pick up.
