The Weekly Wave

Principal's Message
Greetings,
Here are a few reminders of important items that we have worked on so far this week:
Checking Out of the Building. When students check out of the building they should see the supervisors at the main doors. There is a very short (2 item) kiosk that students complete when they check out for appointments or other reasons. See below for more details.
AIT. Academic Intervention Time has started. Students check their grades and sign themselves up every Monday and Wednesday during Laker Time. Students and parents get emailed every time they sign up for Laker Time. See below for what it will look like when you get one of these emails!
College Ready. Career Ready. Life Ready. At DLHS we strive to produce students that meet all three of these criteria as they match with what current research says about how to best prepare students for success in today's world! We are often asked how we measure these categories in students. This year students will be creating an individual "scorecard" that includes specific metrics for each category. Some of these metrics are specific to certain grade levels. For example, the ACT is typically taken in 11th grade. Others can be started right away in 9th grade. As students progress here at DLHS we will revisit this scorecard several times throughout the year in different courses and Laker Time to update our progress and reflect on how we can improve. Check out the scorecard below!
Have a great weekend!

How do students check out of the building?
When students are checking out of the building for appointments they should go to the main doors, see the supervisor, and check out using the "Building Check Out Kiosk" (see the picture below).
To complete the check out process all students need to do is:
1. Scan their student ID (Or type in their Number)
2. Select the reason for leaving.
This is our way of knowing that students have checked out for their appointment, open hour, PSEO course, or internship.
When students check back into the building, they should enter the main office through the secure doors.
Academic Intervention Time (AIT)
What does it look like if my student is signed up for AIT?
Our ultimate goal is to teach students to take responsibility for their own learning. To help accomplish this we intentionally have students check their grades, check their emails, and sign themselves up for AIT on Monday's and Wednesday's. Instructors still have the ability to, and will, sign students up as well if they are falling behind.
Below is an example of what it looks like when a student signs themselves up (Red Card) and when an instructor signs a student up (Blue Card). Look for these emails each week so that you can support your student!
Where is the AIT sign-up link?
Students have all been trained on how to find the AIT sign-up link. It can be found under the "Students" tab on the DLHS homepage.

School Safety At DLHS
Student safety is a top priority at Detroit Lakes Public Schools. As a reminder we would like families to know that the following practices and procedures are in place at DLHS and buildings across the District to ensure the security of our buildings and the safety of our students:
Active adult supervision of buildings and grounds
Secure entrances
Visitors are limited and must check in at the office
External doors have been converted to keyless entrances and are monitored regularly for security
Security camera surveillance of entrances and parking lots
Police liaison and law enforcement have a regular presence at all buildings (SRO housed at DLHS, walk-throughs, drug dogs, student support, etc.)
Staff and students regularly practice safety drills to ensure awareness of procedures and processes
Additionally and most importantly, our staff members work to build intentional relationships with students to foster a sense of belonging and safety at school. Thank you for partnering with us in your child’s education. We will continue to do our best in providing a safe learning environment for all students.
Please remember: parents and students can always report concerns to the Principal-Mr. Omang, Assistant Principal Mr. Messer, DLHS school office 218-847-4491, or any staff member at any time!
We also have an anonymous tip line that can be found around the building and on the displays at school.

September Matters-Attendance Facts!
- Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school!
- Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.
- Chronic absence appears to have doubled by the end of the 2021-22 school year. We estimate that it now affects nearly one out of three students (or 16 million vs. 8 million students in the 2018-19 school year).
