Principals' Message
Dear SCS Families and Caregivers,
One of the quirks of our K-8 district calendar is our early release time on Wednesdays. When your kids are dismissed an hour early, our faculty and staff engage in a variety of meetings and learning activities that fall under the umbrella term “Professional Development.” On any given week, we might be meeting in teams to review curriculum, having a full-staff gathering to review safety protocols, or learning about a new teaching strategy to try out. We’re grateful for this time to engage in professional learning together outside the traditional school day - and we recognize that it requires families and staff to be extra flexible on that day.
One way we’ll be spending some of that time this year is strengthening our own understanding and practices around supporting LGBTQ+ identifying-youth. This past week, we began a year-long partnership with Outright Vermont, a nonprofit that has been supporting youth and educators across Vermont for the past 35 years. All PreK-8 faculty, staff, and administrators are participating in four sessions over the course of the year so that we can ensure that all students are heard, valued, respected, loved, and connected to others in our learning community. Our social-emotional survey data consistently indicates that LGBTQ+ identifying students need more support, and this is one way we aim to respond to that data. We wanted to highlight this work, particularly during VT Pride Month, and thank our faculty and staff for diving in.
Mark your calendars to learn more at a Parent/Caregiver/Community event facilitated by Outright VT here at SCS on Tuesday, October 22 from 6:30-8:30pm. It’s intended for parents and caregivers of LGBTQ+ youth, but all are welcome to join regardless of background. We look forward to seeing many of you there!
Finally, we want to take a moment to thank those of you who attended our 5-8 Curriculum Night yesterday evening. It was wonderful to see faculty, staff, and families talking about the important learning happening in classrooms across the middle level each day. We're grateful for such a strong turnout, and we hope that the spirit of partnership that we felt last night permeates throughout the rest of the year. K-4 families, get ready for Open House coming up this Thursday, 9/26 at 5:00. Have a great weekend, everyone.
Take care,
Alison, Brett, & Emily

Highlights from the Week
SCS contributes to New Guinness World Record!!!
We have outstanding news! SCS was a part of a world record set this past year with Green Up Vermont. We helped set a world record for most pledges to pick up trash in a 24 hour period!
Our students in the SCS middle school helped Green Up Vermont in May during their PE classes, (photos attached) and many others signed the pledge in school to help break this world record!
Today was the official presentation of the record.
On Monday, a small group of students in the 4th grade harvested basil from the school gardens and made pesto with Becky in the kitchen. Students planted the basil last spring as 3rd graders and got to see the full cycle of food production. We are very grateful to the PTO for supporting hands-on food and garden education! Shout-out to Becky for welcoming the students into the kitchen and to the fantastic MLL team for coordinating the logistics of the school gardens!
Welcome Birdie Kareckas
Congratulations to Kevin Kareckas and his family on the arrival of their daughter, Birdie Ann Kareckas, on Thursday.
Announcements & Reminders
Outdoor Classroom Cleanup Day TOMORROW
We are excited to invite you to join us for an Outdoor Classroom Cleanup Day tomorrow from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Our goal is to revitalize this important space so that it can be used more often for outdoor learning and community building. We’ll be working on tasks such as clearing out the undergrowth, laying down woodchips, and defining the space with a perimeter barrier to create a welcoming and inspiring environment for our students. If you didn’t know that we have an outdoor classroom, this is a great chance to come check it out and help us rejuvenate it! The classroom is located behind our athletic fields to the southeast of the basketball court, and we’ll plan to meet near the basketball court at 9:00 to kick things off. Rec soccer will be taking place at the same time, so it should be a lively morning.
If you’d like to join us for all or part of the day, we would love your help! Please click here to complete a short survey so we know who to expect, what times work best for you, and what equipment you might be able to bring. Any amount of time you can spare will make a big difference in improving this space for the entire school community. If you are able to make it out, long pants, gloves, and bug spray are recommended. While the forecast for the 21st looks ideal, we’re holding the same time on the following Saturday, 9/28 as a rain date.
This is a fantastic opportunity for our community to come together and support outdoor learning. Thank you for your support, and we hope to see you there!
Vandalism on SCS Property - we could use your help!
We could use ALL of your help! The SCS recess equipment shed AND the Part2 storage unit both have been vandalized. Both locks are no longer effective, which means we cannot purchase new equipment and store them in these spaces for our students.
We are working on replacing the locks, but please keep a watchful eye on our school property during evening and weekend events. Thank you!
Bike Safety Reminders
Please review and remind ALL bike riders to be extra cautious in all of our parking lots. There was a scary situation at arrival time where a student on a bike rode from the grass on Harbor Road (near the PreK playground) between parked cars and didn't slow down before cruising through the parking lot, while an on-coming car was approaching. Please, please, please SLOW DOWN on bikes and cars!
The bike trailer is back at SCS this year and we really want to focus on bike safety, if you or someone you know needs a bike helmet please reach out to Paul Membrino at pmembrino@cvsdvt.org
ALL Visitors MUST sign in at our Main Office for a visitor badge!
ALL guests need to sign in at our main office to receive a visitor badge - even if you regularly volunteer as a mentor, recess support, etc. We understand this can be an inconvenience due to parking availability, and this is a safety expectation in all CVSD buildings. Thank you for helping us to ensure the safety of all of our students, faculty, and staff.
Shelburne Kids Activities Together (SKAT) is our after-school extracurricular club program. Throughout the year we offer a variety of clubs to 1st - 8th grade students on designated days from dismissal until 4:00 pm. Clubs are free, materials are provided, and late bus transportation is always an option. Club offerings are dependent on adult availability and we are always looking to partner with community members.

September is National Attendance Month
September is National Attendance Month, and it's a great time to get the message out to our community that attendance matters! Student absences in September is a strong predictor of student absenteeism. The Everyone Graduates Center at John Hopkins School of Education found that, in the 2011-2012 school year, students who missed 2 to 4 days of school in September were 5 times more likely to be chronically absent than those who missed fewer than 2 days. Attendance Works has some great social media posts you can access as part of their #BePresentBePowerful 2024 campaign.
We are happy to report that SCS is at 97% attendance since the start of school!!
CVSD Fire Truck Pull Team - Join us!!!
We are excited to announce that this year CVSD will have a team for the annual Outright Vermont Fire Truck Pull on Church St. in Burlington on Saturday, Sept. 28th. There is a celebration starting at 11:00 am, and the Pull begins at 12:00 pm! Here are three ways to support.
Support by Donating! We are hoping to raise $3000 as a district to help support LGBTQ+ youth in Vermont. With 10 days to go we have raised $1,335, which is just shy of 50% of our goal. Click here to donate to the CVSD Team.
Support by Pulling! The truck is easier to pull when we have more people! Join us on your own or with families and friends to visibly show your support for our LGBTQ+ students. Click here to join the CVSD Team. Or email mkelley@cvsdvt.org to tell Meghan that you're going to pull!
Support by Spreading the Word! Share this information with others and recruit them to donate or help pull with CVSD to show our students we see and support them for exactly who they are.
