May 2022 Newsletter
Dear Columbia Crest Rainier Families,
Happy May! This is an exciting time of year at CCA. Spring has arrived, bringing with it blue skies, blooming flowers and green grass. We are finishing our year strong with many wonderful opportunities for our students to get outdoors to explore our beautiful campus and school garden.
The first week of May is Teacher Appreciation Week. It’s a time when teachers are recognized for the work they do each and every day with our students. Our teachers work tirelessly to dedicate their amazing talents and time to lead all students to academic and social success. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of educators. Each one of them adds something special to CCA, and helps make it a wonderful place for students to thrive. Please join me in recognizing each member of our team for the great things they do each day.
Our school year is rapidly coming to an end and there are a lot of events approaching to celebrate the accomplishments of this year. We look forward to Community Day, the Band Concert, Overnight Camp for 5th-8th grade, Kindergarten Graduation, 8th Grade Graduation and the ABC Countdown to the last day of school to name a few.
Thank you for partnering with us to provide the best learning experience to your child(ren).
Wishing you well,
Principal Shew

ASB News
The Columbia Crest Student Council has been hard at work during the month of April. After a great Spring Break they planned another fun reading event. The students stuffed 150 eggs to recognize "Reading is Egg-cellent and held egg hunts in every class. Along with a special egg came a special bookmark to use while reading a favorite AR book. Students also assisted with the Accelerated Reader Student Recognition Program where over 100 prizes were chosen by avid readers. Many students have now hit the 100 point level (one is over 800) and are in the running for the "go for the Gold" event at the end of the year. Student leaders also judged our spring coloring contest and awarded art baskets to the winners.
The current officers have done a great job of building school spirit and promoting reading and many other meaningful projects. Now students are getting ready to "pass the gavel" to students currently campaigning for office. Check out the wonderful campaign posters displayed in the hall. This week students worked on writing and delivering speeches that showcased their love of their school and the things they would like to accomplish if elected to an office. Next week they will speak in front of the ASB and elections will happen. Following that class officer elections will be held.
The meetings at the end of May will be to transition the officers and train them to run meetings using the rules of parliamentary procedure. The eighth grade students will now focus on transition to high school with counselor meetings and access to scheduling and advising support.
Of course the Student Council could not forget Teacher Week! They have followed the school theme of "sticking together" and have created a fun message and treat for their teachers!!
It is hard to believe the year is winding down. Check out the calendar in the front entrance to see how the Student Council is helping to send the whole school off to summer with their artistically created ABC Countdown!!!
Sincerely,
Lucy Fountain, Student Council Advisor

Highly Capable Program Highlight
April Highlight
Our first middle school session was heavily focused on our passion projects and making sure we were ready to jump right in. Remaining students presented their pitches, worked on final plans, and began putting in materials requests. We also did some lego building challenges in honor of Read Across America Day (Dr. Seuss Day) and joined Columbia Crest Middle Schoolers for their read in. Students were gifted donuts by CCA leadership students too!
Our second session we worked on passion projects, solving two minute mysteries, and even did a St. Patrick's Day themed STEM project to celebrate! Our last session students attended a field trip to Pierce College Ft. Steilacoom. They got to tour campus with students and attend a video presentation of our galaxy in the science dome there. Elementary students also celebrated St. Patrick's Day with some themed brain teasers, a leprechaun trap STEM project, and also had time to work on their passion projects.
The highlight for elementary this month was our second session, in which we attended a field trip to Pioneer Farm and the Native American Village. Students got to tour both parts of the facility and learn about how children lived in each type of community in the past. We are looking forward to a few more field trips and fun experiences before the year ends!
