NWEA
Students in fourth grade, fifth grade, and sixth grade took the math and reading NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessments last week. MAP assessments are used to measure each student's progress or growth and let teachers know where a student's strengths are OR if help might be needed in any specific area. Score reports were sent home with your child today. Overall, 78% of our students scored in the proficient range in reading and 82% of our students scored in the proficient range in math. Please keep in mind that this is just one day's snapshot. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher.

A message from our Reading Specialist, Mrs. Buckley:
Reading skills are built on five separate components: phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. These components work together to create strong, rich, and reliable reading abilities, but they’re often taught separately or in uneven distribution.
Phonemic awareness
The ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the sounds in words
The foundation for learning to read and spell
Phonics
The process of matching sounds in words to written letters
Introduces the alphabetic principle, the link between letters and sounds
Fluency
The ability to read with appropriate rate,, accuracy, and expression
Requires the use of multiple reading skills at the same time
Vocabulary
Research shows that vocabulary knowledge helps with reading comprehension
Vocabulary is acquired through listening to conversations, talking, listening to books, and reading independently
Comprehension
Involves identifying and summarizing key ideas
Predicting what will happen next in a text
A message from our school nurse, Mrs. Carey:
Ugh! Strep throat and the flu are rampant in our school right now. Not only are the students sick, but they are spreading it to the adults! We had 35 students and 7 staff members out sick on Thursday.
PLEASE! Check your student’s throats. If they have red swollen tonsils, with or without white patches, they say it’s hard to swallow or it hurts to swallow, or they are tired looking, snotty, and coughing, please GET THEM TESTED for strep and flu!
Thank you!
Have a restful, healthy weekend!
